A delightful farewell musicale was given by Mrs. W. H. Norcross at her home Friday afternoon. The parlors were tastefully arranged for the occasion. Her music class. consisting of fifteen bright, young ladies, and a number of invited friends assembled to listen to a pro gram consisting of vocal and instru mental selections. During the af ternoon a delicious lunoheon was served. Royal Aubrey, agod 16 years, Bon of Irvine Aubrey, of Merrill, was drowned in Lost river about 300 yards above the bridge at Merrill on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clook. The young man was bathing in th river and was alone. He oould not swim and stepping into a hole over bis head he could not save himself People living in the vicinity saw him go to the river but no one wit nessed his unforttinste fate. His failure to ariive home aroused the anxiety and searuh of his pi rents and others, with Ihe result that his dead body was found on Monday in Jjost river. Myriuds of little toads were frisk ing along Main street Monday. They were thickest near the river. It is said they wore iniifratiiiK from tho lower swamps to Upper Klam - atn lake, and we are told that a million toads passine through town is not unprecedented. One day, some years ago, the sidewalks were black with them and they often stampeded and piled up in a jump ing, kicking mass a foot deep. They are as harmless as our snakes nd nearly if nol mute as beneficial. While the snakes destroy rattle snakes and noxious vermin, toads devote particular attention to atomic poisons in tbe air.
