' Work on the Wilson Opera House, as ft is to be called, Is being pushed by a large force of carpenters under the per sonal supervision of the owner of the building, Mr. J. R. Wilson. It Is ex feoted to hae tbe caapenter work com pleted in another week, but before the painting and plastering is done a grand ball will to given in the opera house ander the auspices of the Medford Tire Department. It is a conceded fact that the Wilson opera house will be the finest building, tst furnished and equipped, and safest kail In case of fire, of an; public hall in Oregon south of Salem. The main loor 18-40x68 feet, affording ample space or danoing and other like amusements and it will hare chairs for SCO persons, and the galleries, which extend across the bark end and half way along each side of the room will seat 200, giving a total seating capacity for the opera louse of 700, but in case of necessity space can be bad for at least 100 more thrirs. Tbe stage door is 24x60 feet with the celling 1'i feet in the clear, allowing plenty of stage room for the - setorsand the scenery of any company . that may appear in Medford. The en. tire space of 24x50 feet beneath the stage w'l! be fitted up with dressing and toilet rooms with stairs to reach each f them at the end of the stage. No ef fort will bo spared to make the dress ing rooms' conveniences perfect and to Sully meet the requirements of all who may use them. - - The building has a substantial stone Sandatioo beneath it so there will be no possibility of its ever settling and lecomin? dangerous from that cause Tbe ceiling and the walls down to the wainscoatlng are to be plasetered and to iave a bard finish The ceiling of the auditorium U arched thus giving the 100m a graceful and airy appearance d it is thought that it will add to the acoustic properties of the hall, which are expected to be perfect The build ing will be heated by a furnace and lighted by electricity and special care -.. aas been taken to secure thorough ven tilation.. Over the main - entrance on light 6treet a balcony has been built it he re bands can give concerts before -the regular performance, begins. In' addition to the main entrance on . light street there is a double door 00 &ch side of the main floor and a small door at each end of the stage, tbe aide ytni stage doors leading to sidewalks on each side of the building that extend to the street. These five doors preclude the possibility of there ever being a - ym in case of emergency that makes the clearing of the house a matter of xmments of time. There is a double iooc at each end of the' stage so that s roper ty oan be placed easily upon the stage-direct from tranefer wag0ns. While the carpenter work has been aone by tbe day, the work has been under the supervision of G. L. Scber anerhorn and to his skill as a . designer 1 is due the graceful effect of the arched st-ilirur, as well as the unobtrusive- ap pearance of tbe galleries and the gen aral appearance artfr'symmetry of the ntlre iuterior aad exterior of the build . ' t . Tbe Wilson opera house is certainly a credit to Medford, for it is a solendid addition to the city's publio buildings. and It mil be no small factor in sus taining Medford in its prettage of be ing one of the most up-to-date, pro gressive towns in Oregon."' , . '. Messrs. i. O. Howard and J. H. At well, of this city, are the gentlemen vbo have the painting contract on this building, both idelde and outside. OFFICIAL li.' S Si a al' v.! "I , CAN IHUATKS f ! In addition to the direct money value of the timber that could be grown on the now brush covorcd hllloldel,- I lie gain to tho mining and agricultural In terest of this section would be of al most incalculable value. It la a well known faot that on a hare hill tho tnow molts off quickly and the wator from a rain rurlies down to streams as though from a bonne roof, leaving the irrouiid to dry up quickly, and the brooks and creeks dovoid of water but for a brief period during the winter months. A timber covored hill with Its coating ol mos and trash is like a great sionge to abtorb and to hold back the snow and rain water, giving ItolTa I li tie at a time, thus equalizing the water sup ply ol the country and the flow of water In tbe streams. This constant evapora tion of moisture from tho hills would have a deoldod effect In equalizing our climate both as to Its dryuoss and lit temperature To the fruit growers these forests would mean lo's liability to trusts In tho spring and more moisture during tlio summer, thus making tho ollmatin conditions tor fruit, raising oven moro perfect tban thoy now are.
