N. riARCY, Prop. All Work Promptly Kxecutud Lunu iHiuy uiiuraiiievii Prim JtMl OREGON, FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 1902 A FRUIT GROWERS' m Jackson County Should Have One What Its Advantages Would Be. Tbe time baa now come when the further development of tbe fruit Intercuts of this section make it im perative that tbe fruit growers unite in an organization for their benefit. . There are at least half a dozen reasons why a fruit growers' union would1 'y a help to tbe fruit indus try of this valley. The chief advan tage would be in securing better prices for the fruit. The local mid dle men could be eliminated and the profits that they make could be retained by the growers, for they could, through an association, dis pose of their fruit direct in tbe leading markets of the world. An assooialion by handling fruit in big lots can always be sure of com mending the top price in the mar ket, and has tbe further important advantage of being able to keep its fruitout of a glutted marke', where prices are demoralized. To establish a name for our fruit thai will be known and recognized in the markt ts of the world, is the woik for an ussooiation. Hood River strawberries are kcown from Portland to Chicago and a box of berries having "Hood River" upon it needs no further recommendation to consumers in all tbe vast terri tory where that berry is sold. Southern Oregon fruit cannot be excelled by that of any other sec tion of the United States, and if it was marketed under some special name it would not be long until consumers would rocognize the name as a synonym for Grstquality as they now do "Hood River' for Oregon strawberries, cr "Wateon villo" for California apnles. While advertising the name of Southern Oregon fruit in the mar kets of the woild ia an important work for an association, tbe main taining of that good najje is a mat ter of still more importance and that can only be done through the united efforts of all who are inter estfd in the success of our fruit in dustry. Already there has been improperly packed and short weight boxes of fruit shipped from this section, and if there is much of that kind of work it. will not be long until our fruit will, be giveu such a bad reputation that its sale will be seriously injured at home and abroad. . One dishonest ship per can do an almost irreparable damnge to the fruit interests of a place. Only by a thorough organ ization by the fruit men can they protect themselves from the injury caused by dishonest packers and shippers, for what is everybody's business is nobody's business, and that applies quite as much in the fruit business as in other activ ities. While Southern Oregon is as yet quite free from fruit tree pests, the time 's coming, is stringent prevent atives nre not employed, when these posts will swarm over the valley, ns they have in othei' places, and bring to an end the most prolUallo industry that this oounty possesses. There nre imlolei.t farmers in each locality who allow their orol arde to be infested with all manner of noxious insects, while the towns eventually become veritable nurs eiiesforthe propagation of every kind of a pest that torments the fruit man. No ona grower can en force the state fruit pist law, and only through 'the efforts of a pow erful association can ' tho indolent farmer and the negligent town man be made to keep their fruit trees from Bending forth a myriad of in- NO. 25. eeots e.Hoflc a ion to prey upon the surrounding orchaids. In the mat'.er of freight rates an association would bave a decided advantage ovor an individual. The railroad companies in quoting rates to distant markets would give ' far greater concessions to an associa tion having hundreds of carloads to ship, than to an individual hav ing but two or three carloads to handle. In providing better' ship ping facilities an association would be of great benefit to the fru'tmen, for it could provide ample ware , houses at each of the station from w hich fruit is shipped. In buyine boxes and fruit paper tbe associa tion, by buying in large quantities, could save quite a margin over that paid by individual buyers. Hood River.-Oregon, has one of tbe most successful fruit growers' organizations on this coast. Of the work of this union, Hon. B. L. Smith, president of the Oregon State Board of Horticulture, has tbe foilowinp to say in an interview given in the Portland Telegram "We sell our fruit tdrough our as sociation, which has beea in exist ence ten years, and we find, that it is the best means of disposing of it." "Individuals can do nothing ip these days of organization, and tbe purchasers will hardly condescend to talk to the grower who tries alone to sell his produce." "The association guards against a glut in any portion of its market, and thus distributes the fruit in ac' cordance with the demand. The price, so far, has been fair this sea son, and leaves a fair margin (or the grower. Our berries are all sold at the depot, and so we take no chances rf decay or a falling mar ket. Tbe as.'ociaiion method is tbe only proper means of fruit disposal. We have found that out by ten years' experience, and we v ould not go back to tbe individual, haphaz ard method again." This union buys the fruit of each grower, paying for it as fast as de livered at their ware house in Hood River, the regular market price and! then at the close of the year what ever profit has been made is di vided among tbe members in pro portion to the amount of fruit de livered to the union. This.method of dividiug the profits precludes the possibility of a few getting control of the stock of the union and ab sorbing all of tbe profits. When marketing fruit the union has a man in the east, who keeps in close touch with the market and routes the cars, in transit, to the city where prices are highest. But if a sud den glut should happen in the mar ket of any city to which a car is be ing sent, this manager promptly changes the destination or tbe car to some place where there is a firm market, thus avoiding a forced sale at a losing price. Such a 'system as this would enable the growers of Southern Oregon fruit to secure better prices than they now realize with each grower handling his own fruit. ' Some boys tossing a dead robin about the streets was a eight wit nessed in Medford a few days since. In reply to a question as to tho cpuse of the bird's death the boys stated that they had killed the robin "'cause itbtole strawberries." Rob ins as well as many other of the in sectiverous birds eat 'strawbeiries and other fruits, but the heft dozen berries that a robin will eat in a day is very small pay indeed for its tireless work, in destroying bug?, worms and other pests that prey upon the farmers' crops. ...
