THE HEDFORD MAIL Published Every Friday Morning. A. S. 8LITON. Mbdford, Friday, July 13, 1900. MN WM BORN TO HUSTLE. Ha la of taw days; but quite a plasty. SUBSCRIPTION $1.50 PER YEAR Roland In the Postomce at Medtord, Oregon as Seoond Class Hall Manor. On July 1, 18U6, under the last Democratic administration, the per capita of money in oiroulation in the United States was 21.10 This year, on June 1, it was $26.71 per capita, an increase of for every inhabitant in the country. W. J. Bryan and Adlai B.Steven eon, nominated by the. Democratic party at Kansas City, for president and vice president, make a good mixed team' of distinctly socialistic tendencies. Stevenson was one of the original greenbackers and 16 to 1 advocates, and Bryan is a Popu list, afflicted with all the isms and vagaries of the Populist party, aud is a broad gauge inflationist and fiatist. "Stevenson's own state defeated bim for delegate to the KanBas City convention, but offered him the place of alternate, which he de clined ; and he remained away from the convention. His neighbors sup posed be never would be recalled from political obscurity, for he is only a commonplace roan, with a colorless political and merely per functory official record. But now they are cultivating him again." Oregonian. ' Stevenson is the Democratic nominee for vice president. The Washington Post, in an able editorial, contrasts the surplus of almost three hundred million dol lars in the United States treasury at the present time, with the balance four years ago which was the result of bond issues in time of peace. It also shows ihat notwithstanding the heavy war expenses that have been, and are being incurred, the surplus for this fiscal year will amount to about 165,000,000 as compared with the - deficit of nearly $30,000,000 four years ago. It is pointed out that this is not the result of the war taxes alone, because, comparing the month of May this year with May, 1806, there was an increase of almost $6,500,000 this year in re ceipts froiB-ouetome alone. ' Nebraska in 1897 paid $10,000, 000 on mortgages, in 1898 $49,000, 000 and io 189 $78,000,000. This is a total on mortgage indebtedness paid amounting to $146,000,000. The amount of mortgages' in force both on acres and lots in Nebraska in 1890 was $176,000,000, so that the payments made in the past three years have reached a sum of only $30,000,000 less than the total mortgage indebtedness of the state 10 years ago. In addition, the farm lands of tbe state have doubled in Value. ; Nebraska is Mr. Bryan's home Btttto. He will: hardly dare tell the farmers of that state that they have not been prosperous un der the Republican administration and that' the Democratic 16 to 1 cure is the "remedy they most need. The people of the United States are paying $1,000,000 a day for tropical pi oducts used in American manufactures, or for food and drink. Most of the articles can be produced in a more or less degree in the islands which have recently come into closer relationship with the United States. These ar icles com prise -.Bugar, ; coffee, silk, rubber, fibres, fruits, nuts, tobacco, tea, eottOD, gums, cocoa, slices, rice, cabinet and dye woods, liquorice root, indigo, cork wood, sponges, ivory, eto. As our island posses sions begin to develop under Amer ican administration we shall pro cure mofe of such articles from those sources, and in return for our purchases the people of the islands will buy more of the products of our farms and faotorjes. The mad nightmare of heathen rage aud fanaticism that is running riot in a wild orgie of vicious ignor ance and murderous frenzy for Christian blood in China, is an un restrained exhibition of the narrow prejudices of pagan in tolerance and deepseated hatred of the idol wor shiper for everything civilizing and Christianizing. A people of this kind, ignorant, superstitious, relent lets and cruel, and uncaring and insensible to consequetioes, are moat difficult to deal with. Should the revolt become general and involve the whole empire, as seems prob able now from the rapidity with which it is spreading, the "Powers" will have their hands full to handle the 400,000,000 of people scattered over the vast area of the empire. If the worst comes to the worst, of course thete can be but one end to the contest. China will lose, though it will cost billions of money and hundreds of thousands of lives. Even though the empire should not be dismembered, the indemnities it would be called upon to pay would utterly , bankrupt and destroy it. Viewing the condition of affairs from the most hopeful standpoint, the situation is a most unfortunate and deplorable one for China. Among the Churches. M. E, CHURCH, SOUTH. The paator will return and All hta pulptt next Sunday at 11 o'clock. No services la the evening. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. OM ramllle-a In Now Vek Thal Tlsne on Thai A karad Taakte. A wet sheet and a flowing sea has nothing whatever to do with life aboard a yavht as exemplified In the Bay Illdge Yaobt bssln, in South Brook lyn, says tbe New York Herald. There are five or six yachts mere, one or mom roomy sehooner crafl, wliloli ror va rious reasons are not in commission this summer. Nevertheless the owners and their families or their friends live and sleep on board. On one sloop are Ave young men, who go to a skyscraper building- In Nassau street every morn ing and take out two or three vlvaelous typewriter girl wben worn is over to make the evenings merry. They rented the boat on condition that they would not take her outolde the basin and hired retired sea captain, who lives near the basin, to look after the boat during the day and to "mess" for them. They And it cheaper than paying board In the city, and ever so much pleasanter, Three families wintered on yachts In the Bay Ridge basin last winter, and they enjoyed the experiment so much that they talk of trying it again. The bllz.urd and the rough weather had no terrors for them. One sloop.-the Perl, was housed nliove decks, very muuh like those In the tnles we rend about Arctic expeditions. The families who lived in this way ware on terms of sociability and visited every night for games and cards. They gave a boat party In Jan uary and their friends In Brooklyn who are given to assisting at social en tertainments joined them In a modest little vaudeville. .-When the basin was frozen solid one night they gave a sknting party, with a piping hot supper below decks as a wind-tip.
