OREC - ON, FRIDAY, JULY 13, 1900 MINES, MINERS AND OF SOUTHERN OREGON. (Written exclusively for The Mail by a reliable representative.) . , A direct report from the Copper Stain, ou Mt. Reuben, is to ,the ef fect tbat development,, work, la be ing pushed on the mine m fast as a force of twelve men can do it.' The showing bo far is moet encouraging and no time will be lost in proving the value of the property, , ,; 1 0. W. Thompson, ioperinteudent of the Victor, Jr. mine, haa, re turned, from San F;anoiacp, where be went to buy five additional atampi for the mill which has. been in operation at the -mine for some time. The mill building is -being enlarged preparatory to putting in the extra stamps, which will be done at once. The dredge at Waldo baa experi enced a number of delays during the season from, breakages. ' The ground is unusually hard and there are many boulders to contend with, and, though the machinery is heavy it has not seemed to be sufficiently strong to. do the work required of it; yet the company has .lifted and sluiced off a large amount of ground ' There has been no report, so far as The Mail has learned, of any clean-up yet. The report of the yield of sixteen and one-half tons of ore crushed at the Kubli Gold Standard mine last week, as stated by K. Kubli to The Mail, gave the amount as a few cents more than $1536. , The report from the Selby smelting works, of San Francisco, shown to us Satur day, givis the true amount as 91576, forty dollars more than re ported by Mr. Kubli. The quality of the gold as represented by the certiBcate is very fine. This is cer tainly a high average for eucn a considerable quantity of ore. Simmons & Cameron, . of the Waldo hydraulic property, have oleaned up this years run, but the usual reticence of the company has been observed, and it has been im possible to get any figures as to the amount taken out. The season s work, as gleaned from Mr. Cameron, has been largely preparatory,' that is, preliminary to a new opening to reach certain ground the company is anxious to work. While- this year's output has been all the com pany expeo'ed it will probably be more'1 than ' . duplicated " next, 'ear when better ground is reached. . - - '' Al. Sturgis, of the, Forest creek hydrauho mine, was in" the' valley the' first, of .the ' weelr,'. looking for ha,nds to, help qiean;up. ,.'(,He, .wants quite a number and : will, pay good wages.'" He said he had -not been able to find anyone who- had not already something to do, and that he bad not heard a calamity yap in the whole rounds. He is for.Mo Kinley and Roosnelt,. and believes in prosperity and the Sturgis mine. Al. saye it will take him a-hundred years to work the claim out but that he has decided to 'retire from' business belore that time.. ,. He savs his net margin will not be Icbb than $1,000 this year. It will take 25 or 80 years to reaoh his best, ground with a suitable opening.. .This is the kind of property that pays. Venable, Gangwisch. & O'Neil, who have been developing a ledco near the mouth of Palmer creek, and " have " been ' engaged several months in running a long tunnel to strike the vein at a lower "level, made the contact a f w days ago and will now do a lot of stoping be fore going down further. When sufficient quantity of ore is on the NO. 28. I MINING dump to insure the operation of the mill for a reasonable time it will be put up and set to work crushing. The milj; a five-stamp, has already been botignt, and only awaits sbip ment qnd, setting up. The vein has no uniformity ;; of width. ' Il is "wavy ", or serpeptinein appearance, and the ore is alternately rich', high grade and medium, but all free milling..! Gold is plainly seen in much of the ore, which will run in to the hundreds per tpnT The aver age, however, Mr. Gangwisch thinks, will not be far . from , $60, per ton. Stoping will be pushed and the ore taken out as fast as possible. Bert Hainey, of the Star Gulch Mining Co.; of ShurtlefL 4 Hainey, has bought out Mr, Shurtleff, and now owns two-thirds of the property, consisting oi the plan and 400 acres of. mining ground., ince Mr. Hainey took, bom ol tne property, aeyeral months ago, he piped back from the present channel and dis covered an old. channel running parallel with , the new, and it is in this old channel where he found the rich pay and large .nuggets. Dur ing the season he has picked up a large amount of money in pieces varying in size from 50 cents to $20. The largest nugget found weighed $17? 25, and . the second largest'. $118.25. Mr. Haiuey would hardly give a man a nickel to' insure him a fortune, so certain is he of the rich ness of the old channel he has d is oovered. He is confident .from tht trend of the t-hahnel that it rims purallel with the new fur a long dis tance, and if it should, there is no question but Mr. Hainey will take out a large amount of money. Iii friends wish him the fullest measure of success in his enterprise. ., , The Hampton & Lewis hydraulic claim, on Tommy's gulch, a tribu tary of Grave creek , has a character peculiarly its own. The company has a large amount of ground and baa built two very large ditches iu order to have a supply of water equal to the work to be done.: The situation is. eucn tne company is obliged to use an elevator. . From four to six giants are used under a pressure of 350, to . 400 feet, and under this heavy pressure and great volume of water the gravel is forced 1T the: chute from forty ! to sixty met to secure fall and dump. . !Jaa. Frayoef, from ; whom these facts were obtained, and who has been working for the;, company for . the past, six months, says the elevator works, perfectly and; that the pres sure is suffioient to force great boul ders up the chute that three men could not lift. '. The machinery has woraea periecuy aunng tne season and a large amount' of bedrock has been uncovered.! Mr. Frayne thinks the olean-u'p will be large. A force of forty, to sixty men is employed. The 'company is. a strong' one, , and the property is regarded as im mensely valuable. Last '. year the gravel was successfully elevated sixty feet.'LThia jfooka incredible, but there is hardly, a limit to the power' of water'finder pressure." Mr. Osgood is a maiVof almoat un limited means, and baa been most favorably impressed with Southern Oregon from bis first visit berp, . F. M. Wade, superintendent of the Grand Applegate Company, was) . down from the mine the last of, the week, and informed The Mail, that piping had been continued steadily since the start and would probably be continued all summer, as there would be . an , abundant, supply of water during the whole eeason.; , Ho said he was getting a good working , face on the opening and would be able to sluice off a lrge amount of ground during : theM(snnqmer. A nothing has been done in, the way of testing the, ground-piped over, Mr: Wade is unable to' form any opinion as to probable resolts.' . Since this is the best water - privilege in the county, and may t be extended indefinitely down -Applegate so as to cover an immense-body. of min ing land, it ought to be one of the best, as it is certainly' one of the most permanentproperties in South ern Oregon. ' Good accounts will be beard from - this ' mine under its present management.' ' Kubli Bros, have just completed a run of 164 tons of ore at the Gold Standard which yielded the hand' some sum of $1,536 This' speaka for itself and makes any wordy comment unnecessary. r That this) is a valuable property cannot' be denied.. Work wjlFb "pushed un til the ledge and stringer corue to gether when, it is expected, a fich bed, of ore will' be found.
