We believe no fair-minded person has reason for finding fault with the course taken in this matter. While we would like to accede to any further requests for space, we have neither the time nor can we afford to yield space sufficient for a president of Mexioo? It is indeed doubtful if fifty per cent of the stuff ever reached people who have any use for it, or if one-half of the other fifty per cent reach people who have either the time or disposition to make any use of it in any experi mental way, but congress is prac tically a unit in its determination to have seeds, and the secretary of agriculture will have to furnish them or keep himself in a good many kinds of trouble between now and the day of adjournment. While congress has not the power to pre vent the organization of trusts, ex cept those of a commercial nature, it may make it unlawful to ship the articles they own, produce or con trol from one state to another, and thus carry out the designs of such organization. The attorney general 1 . a re com menus mat tne jaw be so amended as to leave no doubt as to its definition of trusts as they effect trade and commerce, that it con tain a provision like that of the interstate commerce law to prevent the refusal of witnesses answering on the grounds of self-accrimina tion and by lessening the difficulty of obtaining proof, if not entirely re moving it, by enacting as a rule of evidence that the purchase or com bination in any form of enterprises in different states, which were com petitors before such purchase or com bination, should be prima facie evidence of an' attempt to monopo- ize. ... v . Potatoes grafted on tomatoes have produced flowers, to matoes and a few tubers. An experiment in this direction was made tlurlrjg the past season in Wisconsin. Two tubers were planted In separate pots in March, and when about four to live inches hlh the plant wuh cut oft half an inch from the level of the soil and a graft ot a tomato introduced on May 8. Arrangements are being made to being daily 10,000,000 gallons of sea water into London for public and private baths, for road water and sewer flushing, the water to be taken from the ocean fifty miles away. There is a rumor in cirealation hich states, that Mrs. Amelie Rives Chanler, who won consider able fame as the author of ".The Quick or the Dead," is about to marry the Russian Prince Trou- belzkoi. Three masked men entered the Market street bank, San Francisco, ast luesday morning, threw the cashier and book-keeper into the vault, took all the coin from the cashier's counter and made good their escape. A Texas Minister has been found guilty of heresy, but as he is in possession of the church and the arger part of the congregation are indifferent as to the result, he is not much troubled over the findings ot the trial body. John Hays Hammond, the Ameri can engineer who fell ill in the Pre toria jail is out on $50,000 bail and is occupying a cottage in the Trans vaal capital, but is under rigid police restrictions to prevent him umpmg his bail. There is current a report to the effect that the Japanese are now manufacturing the Cleveland, Co- umbia, Rambler, and every other make of American bicycle, true to the original, even to the patent date, and placing them on the mar ket for $17 each. Cincinnati has a scandal in which young lady betrayed was mur dered and three young scape goats, who have wretchedly thrown down the heritage of an honorable birth right, are in a fair way to pay the penalty of their waywardness on Kentucky gallows. Emperor William, while riding in an open carriage, was struck with what he at first thought an "infer nal" package, and an examination did not established a very different condition of things, as the papers were filled with socialist speeches and attack on the crown. Chicago druggists have formed a syndicate to fight the manufacturers of proprietary medicines on account of cut rates in department stores, and propose to duplicate everything in the patent medicine line with equally good and less expensive preparations of their own. The people of Egypt are satisfied with British occupation of that country, a fact which is borne out by the uneasy and restless feeling, amounting almost to a pantic, which was brought about by the re port that the country was about to be evacuated by the English. A number of the leading accident insurance companies have pro nounced their ultimatum in the matter of bicycle riding, have de clared it a hazardous occupation and will even up matters by charg ing heavier premiums or reducing the amount of weekly accident or death benefits. The governor of the Mexican state of Chihuahua has placed guards over Fitzsimmons and other prize-fighters who are quartered on that side of the border, and notified the pugilists that they are not to leave their quarters without per mission and the company of an at tendant. The Washington correspondent to the New York World claims to have discovered that bids were opened at the treasury department several hours before the time for re ceiving bids had expired, and that the Morgan syndicate gat such tips as enabled them to fix up the proper fractions on the bid which they put in only a few moments ahead of the fixed hour.
