6 Wednesday, January 29, 2020 GO! magazine — A&E in Northeast Oregon Dead Lee brings ‘cosmic Americana’ style By Lisa Britton EO Media Group BAKER CITY, LA GRANDE — Brian Koch and Kara Harris are heading east from Portland to give two concerts. “Our music we call cosmic Americana,” Koch said. “We’ve been described as Dolly Parton meets Elliott Smith — in space.” The duo, known as Dead Lee, will perform Feb. 6 at Churchill Dancehall, 3451 Broadway St. in Baker City. Enter through the 16th Street parking lot. Tickets are $8 in advance at Sweet Wife Baking and MC Taco Bus or www.churchillbaker.com/ events. Tickets at the door are $10. Food from MC Taco Bus and drinks from Copper Belt Winery and Barley Brown’s will be avail- able to purchase at the event. Dead Lee’s second show is Feb. 7 at Side A Brewing, 1219 Washing- ton Ave. in La Grande. Koch and Harris have played together as Dead Lee for about 18 months. He’s played music for more than 20 years, and she’s been a solo songwriter since she was a teenager. “We realized we had a lot of musical connections in common,” Koch said. Koch is also a founding and cur- rent member of Portland indie-rock band Blitzen Trapper — he’s been the band’s drummer for 20 years. “We took last year off for the fi rst time after 12 pretty solid years of touring, which enabled Kara and I to play as much as we wanted,” he said. Dead Lee has released one al- bum and is recording a second. Their instruments include two guitars — one electric with effects, one acoustic — and a kick drum. Credit for the name Dead Lee goes to Harris, who coined it when she was playing solo. “If I played old folk songs and dressed like a ghost, I could get people to my show,” she explained.
