6 Wednesday, October 9, 2019 GO! magazine — A&E in Northeast Oregon Musicians present Artist turns Hat Rock home into gallery music of John Coltrane LA GRANDE, BAKER CITY — The Rob Scheps/Matt Cooper Quartet will present an evening of the music of John Coltrane at two shows this week in Northeast Oregon. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 10 at hq (112 Depot St., La Grande) and at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at Churchill School (3451 Broad- way St., Baker City). Scheps is a dynamic saxophon- ist and fl autist who has performed with Aretha Franklin, Buddy Rich, Gil Evans, Sheila Jordan and John Abercrombie, among many oth- ers. He is a frequent performer at Smalls and The Cutting Room in New York City, and he tours and leads his own groups nationally and internationally. His most re- cent album is “Comencio,” released by Steeplechase records. In addition to performing, Scheps is a composer and educator who has given clinics and classes at more than 100 universities and elementary schools. Scheps will be backed by Matt Cooper (keyboard), Luke McKern (bass) and Mark Emerson (drums), a trio dubbed “La Grande’s Wreck- ing Crew” for their able accompani- ment of visiting jazz artists. This is Scheps’ fourth visit to Northeast Oregon in the past decade. Previous appearances have featured the music of Wayne Shorter and McCoy Tyner, as well as a guest soloist appearance with The Rob Scheps/Matt Cooper Quartet will perform this week in La Grande and Baker City. the EOU Jazz Ensemble. John Coltrane, the subject of this week’s shows, was one of the most infl uential fi gures in modern jazz, widely known for his work on albums such as “My Favorite Things,” “A Love Supreme” and “Giant Steps.” Doors open at hq on Thursday at 7 p.m. and at Churchill School on Friday at 6 p.m. Refreshments will be available for purchase at both venues. Tickets are $5 for the La Grande show. The Baker City performance will be $10 at the door. Advance tickets ($8) for the Churchill show are available at Sweet Wife Baking, 2080 Resort St., in Baker City. HAT ROCK — Art afi cionados are invited to view the works of artist Jean Christofori Howton at a pop-up art gallery at her Hat Rock home near Hermiston on Saturday. The show will be open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 12 at 34009 Beach Shore Drive, with art cov- ering walls throughout the large, split-level home. Sno Road Winery will serve wine and chocolate. “I have a lot of new work,” the artist said. Howton, who has spent time in La Grande, has shown her paint- ings and drawings at galleries around the West Coast and Eu- rope and was the 2005 guest of honor for the Spring Fair in Les Andelys, France. Her works range from oil paintings of pastoral scenes to abstract pieces in mixed media. Many of her pieces are inspired by the French countryside. She lived in Normandy, France, for 10 years after her husband died, before eventually return- ing to their home in Hat Rock. Last year she decided to host her fi rst home gallery show and it was such a success that she is bringing it back for a second year. “I’ve got paintings every- where,” she said.
