Biographer Gives Account Of 1949 Stromboli Scandal NEW VORK (UPIi Ingrid Bergman rejected an abortion as a solution to her extra-marital pregnancy during the "Stromboli scandal" of 1949, according to a new biography about the Swedish actress. Written by her former public re lations adviser, Joseph Henry Steele, "Ingrid Bergman: An In timate Portrait'' includes behind-the-scenes material pertaining to Bergman's affair with Italian film director Roberto Rossellini while on the lava-covered island ol Stromboli in the Mediterranean. But after all, what a poor mis erable way out." Steele says Miss Bergman agreed to announce her "intention to retire into private life "in order to appease her critics. Plywood Firm Drops Action EUGENE (Uril Another hurdle was cleared Wednesday in the proposed 80-million dollar sale of the Booth-Kelly lumber Cor poration to the U. S. Plywood Corporation when Springfield Tly wood Corporation (hopped a court action which would have blocked the transaction. Springfield had sought an in junction to delay the sale pend ing outcome of a Lane County Circuit Court trial involving Georgia-Pacific and Booth-Kelly. The Springfield firm is jointly owned by those two. Springfield plywood said it drop ped the suit because the pro posed sale contract contains a clause that U.S. Plywood will assume all obligations of Booth Kelly arising out of a 1940 agree ment which provides for sale of logs to Springfield by Booth-Kelly- Paper Appeals Libel Verdict LONDON (UPD Libcrace, vin dicated by a British jury in his libel suit against the tabloid Daily Mirror, today faced further legal action before he could col lect his $22,400 in damages. He was awarded the money Wednesday from the Mirror and its columnist, William "Cassan dra" Connor, on grounds Connor implied in a 1956 article that he was a homosexual. The Mirror, which spent an es timated $45,000 fighting the case, filed notice of an apical. If the appeal is granted, it would mean a new trial. Payment of damages was be ing upheld pending the outcome of the . appeal action. I.iberncc's lawyers, in a state ment after Wednesday's decision, said the American entertainer was "delighted his reputation has been vindicated by the verdict of the British jury. The Mirror's tabloid rival, the Daily Sketch, praised the pianist today for having the courage to go to court and fight to clear his name. Body Of Missing Woman Recovered From River SALEM (UPD The body of a woman missing since last Nov. 18 was recovered from the Wil lamette river near here Thurs day night. The body, identified as that of Mrs. Grace I. Wiley, 57, Dayton, was found in a submerged auto mobile which was discovered by two water skiers, William Wag ner and Robert Bowdcn of Salem just north of the Wheatland ferry. The car was pulled from the riv er by a wrecker. Mary t. Carlgrcn Taken By Death Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Carleren. 41, of 1401 Z avenue, died .liinp 18. in a local hosoital after a short illness. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Mrs. Carlgrcn was born in Sum merset, Wis., July 21, 1917. She has been a resident of La Grande for 11 years and is a member of the Lutheran church. She is survived by her husband Glen Carlgrcn; three sons, John L'., Daniel Glenn, and Dean Terry; three daughters, Darlenc, Linda. and Dcbora Ruth all of U Grande; Mrs. Diana Carlyle, An chorage, Alaska; two brothers Fred Pearson, Ladysmith, Wis., and Charles Pearson, Elktron Md.; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Mor- ncr, Eau Clair, Wis., Miss Viola Pearson, Kansas City, Mo. She also leaves six grandchild ron. Firemen Rescue Man From Blaze PORTLAND (UPD A 58-year-old man was saved by three firemen in an early morning Port land apartment house fire today. tail Walker, of Portland, was carried in a semi-conscious state from his flaming room in the Edenholm Apartments.
