POOCH SOT R A (SC tM, A TILL BUGS SETS A FOOT C-- lJ-y AGAINST TH JIl fl CV It Looked A Little Like A Bumbling yBy Movie NEW YORK (UPI) Thursday night Playhouse 90 got mixed up with the posh set and turned out a tosh play. For the first time this season, the CBS-TV drama showcase de fected to film, reeling out 90 min utes of a movie 'which had been shot in England for theatre con sumption. "Dark as the Night" it was called and a dark and murky piece of dramaturgy it was stodgy at the start, muddy around the center, oozcy at its close. It all looked a little like a bumbling "B'' movie, which is rather fit ting, because it was. The story was one of those beddy British things about a wealthy chap who' was running for Parliament, but whose wife was threatening to leave him, a bit of a fix, wot? Just to compli cate matters, his chauffeur was trying to kidnap his wife, his chauffeur's girl friend was trying to rob his safe, a gossip - colum nist was trying to blackmail him, and his housemaid was hysterical, "What a situation," said the chap midway, "just. . .about. . .as . . .dark ... as ... the . . night" Which summed it up all rather neatly, I thought. BURLEIGH & CAREY Attorneys for Plaintiff Residing at La Grande, Oregon. Pub. May 29, June 5, 12, & 19, 1959 Michael Wilding, Dennis Price and Michael Hordern were among the players thrown to the lines. The female involved was Laraine Day. She looked properly dis traught and I can't say I blame her. Thursday morning, NBC-TV cut into its regular schedule to pre sent some snippets of film cabled from London to North America. The historic film was shown in a couple of sections the first contained shots of London Airport and Buckingham Palace; the sec ond offered Queen Elizabeth wav ing ta-ta to her mom and sister and Prime Minister Harold Mac millan at the airport. The footage had been shot about two hours before it was shown here. Its quality was fairly good: The definition was a little misty, but all of its parts were quite recog nizable, right down to the lumpy dress of the royal family. Two years from now, according to an announcement on the spe cial show, a new improved cable will be laid from Scotland to New foundland. And in 1969, there should be something approaching an around-the-world cable. The vistas this sort of thing opens giddys the senses. Think, for example, of a billion or so people all over the globe sitting down at once to watch American cultural contributions like Arthur Murray Parly or the Price is Right. Who knows? We may eventually end up numbing our enemies into submission. The Channel Swim: A soft drink sponsor (Canada Dry) has placed a verbal order with NBC-TV for 10 Sunday one hour specials next season there's a good chance that Mitch Miller will emcee the musical shows. CBS-TV's Twenti eth Century will shoot two of its offerings in Poland and Japan this summer the tentative ti tles: "Poland Today" and "The Changing Face of Japan." CBS-TV has reshuffled its fall schedulo: Dennis the Menace will lead into the Ed Sullivan Show on Sundays; a Western, Hotel de Paree, will follow Rawhide on Fridays; another Western, John ny Ringo, will lead into Zane Grey Theatre on Thursdays; the Dennis O'Keefe Show now is set for Tuesdays replacing The Law breakers, the debut of which will be held back until January. ABC-TV is trying to see a Three Stooges special for next season. Pat Weaver, former president of NBC, has moved in as head of the international division of an ad agency, McCann Erickson. Hope Emerson, of NBC-TV's Peter Gunn series, will be a regular in the cast of the new CBS-TV Den nis O'Keefe series next fall. al.. I . ft,.nde. Federal Mediator George Walk er said members of the Pile Driv ers, a Carpenters' affiliate union, were expected to return to their jobs today. The national union committee, which arrived here the first of the week, overruled the two locals Portland and Astoria to end the dispute. The AGC had threatened a shut down of all of its 400 million dol lars worth of construction projects in Oregon and Southern Washing ton if the Pile Drivers walkout continued. About 1,200 men were affected by the strike and some 15 million dollars in projects were tied up.
