Multnomah Health Office Gets Criticism PORTLAND (UPD - The. gov crning council of the Multnomah County Medical Society Tuesday night accepted a report sharply critical of the. county health de partment, rapping it particularly for last spring's head lice scare in Portland schools. The medical society report dc clnrcd that the diagnosis of an epidemic of head lice infestations "could not be confirmed by physi cians or other qualified experts." The report also listed three other indictments of the public health department: It has treated children with acute illnesses, de spito a lack of adequate personnel or facilities; personnel of the de partment have, in some instances, disparaged private physicians treating patients; misuse of pub lic money by immunizing children whose parents .could well afford that service from private physi cians. . .-. , , i The report concluded: "Correc tions of defects in administration of the Multnomah County Division of Public Health arc urgent" and it added, "Restoration of popular confidence in the division, and of physicians' confidence in its- ad ministration., requires . that the MISC. Bomb Moll' Reveals Ring Of Terrorists AMMAN, Jordan (UPD Evi dence supplied by a 20-year-old bomb moll disclosed the exis tence of a terrorist ring organized at the American University in Beirut with support from Syria and Egypt, it was announced Fri day. ' 'A government announcement said Nadia Salti, arrested in con nection with an Aug. 2 bombing, cracked under questioning and gave the names of a score of other plotters almost all, like herself, recent graduates of the American University. , The conspirators, including a number of professional men and some minor officials, sought last year to overthrow King Hussein, were charged with setting off more than 200 bombs here. Most of tho plotters have been arrested, the announcement said, and many have confessed their guilt. The government said the ring's activities were inspired by agents of the United Arab Republic (Egypt-Syria! in Beirut and Da mascus. Monkey Virtually Unharmed By Fall Of Giant Balloon CROSBY, Minn. (UPIi "Mathil da," a 13-pound female monkey, emerged virtually unharmed from a fast fall of more than 11 miles beneath a punctured balloon. The monkey and her fellow pas sengers, a group of frogs, flies and gold fish, were sent up Thurs day in a pressurized gondola as part of a series of tests on the effects of cosmic rays in space travel. Their 20-Story balloon, largest plastic balloon ever launched, was expected to soar to 135,000 feet, or 25 miles above the earth. But the big bag burst at an altitude of about 60,000 feet and the stor age cargo plummeted to earth. Only the goldfish failed to sur vive the fall. Their water contain er spilled. The Air Force, which sponsored the flight, recovered the balloon on a farm about 60 miles from its launching site near Crosby. Group Challenges Need For Services Of Ex-Senator PORTLAND (UPD Multno may County Commissioners, Tues day challenged the need for the services of former Senator Guy Cordon as a $l,000-a-month repre sentative for O & C counties in Washington, D.C. Commissioners Jack Bain and M. James Gleason asked Ralph Petersen, president of the O & C executive committee, for a com plete accounting of Cordon's ac tivities for the Association of O & C Counties in the capital. The commissioners acted after receiving a letter from Lane County Commssioner Robert W. (UPD Charles Edward Blalack, 24, and his 19-year-old wife, Evelyn, were, arrested ' Wednesday on charges of growing a garden of marijuana. . .... Police said the couple admitted growing the herb, drying it and making cigarettes because they "like to smoke to relax.!' "Well, we don't drink. Observer, La Grande, Ore., At 5:37 a.m., p.d.L.Aug. 1 the Nautilus nosed under the Arctic ice near Point Barrow on the north coast of Alaska ' By. the time it emerged near Greenland, at 6:54 a.m., p.d.t., Aug. 5, it had charted a new route in man's long conquest of the seas, discovered an unsuspect ed deep channel to the Arctic, and found undersea mountain ranges not previously known. Anderson said the Nautilus cruised more than 400 feet be neath ; the icecap which was 10 to 15 feet thick, two or three feet less than it is in winter. The Nautilus found and followed a "deep sea valley" 300 to 1,200 feet deep into the Arctic Sea ba sin.
