Steel, automobile, department store, aircraft, tobac cos, and amusement issues were in the forefront. Rails joined the rise and the rail equipment also moved ahead. Demand for stocks was based on a bright outlook for the post reconversion period and hence traders paid only passing atten tion to strikes and other current problems. FLAMES SWEEPING COLUMBIA FOREST VANCOUVER, Wash., Oct. 8 (UP) Flames wcro sweeping over more than 1,000 acres of the Columbia national forest, north cast of here, as a strong cast wind whipped up the fire today. The fire, starting Sunday, was raging between Gumbolt lookout and the Tatoosh hills. Only 65 men were reported fighting the fire, which was blown from snug to snag by a hot, dry wind, and forest service officials were clam oring for more help. Hess Returns to Germany for Trial LONDON, Oct. 8 (UP) Rudolf Hess, former deputy fuehrer of the nazi party who flew to Brit ain on a fantastic mission in 1941, left by plane for Germany today to stand trial as a. war criminal, . Hess, unkempt and thin, left Madeley air field near Abergav enny, Wales, for Frankfort at 8:50 a.m. He was escorted by an army guard, a medical officer, an at tendant and an official of the United Nations war crimes com mission. Ray White, Dun can, was arrested on charge of being drunk. Both men are be ing held for city court today. ACCIDENT Automobiles driven by FThomas W. Wade, Baker, and Lilllo Pearl Crawor, Portland, collided last night on highway 30 six miles west of La Grande. Damage is estimated at $5 for the Wade car, and $50 for Miss Crawer's. COL L I SION Automobiles driven by Doris Kesler, La Grande, and Leon Dickey, Wal la Walla, collided yesterday on highway 30 one and one-half miles east of La Grande as Dickey stopped to pick up some soldiers. Damage was not estimated. DAUGHTER BORN Mr. and Mis. Paul Pittam, formerly of La Grande, but now of Jacksonville, Fla., are parents of a daughter born Sept. 21. The daughter weighed six pounds and 15 ounces and has been named Bar bara Gayle. Mr. Pittam is in the navy signal corps. CAR RECOVERED A 1930 Oldsmobile coupe reported stolen Saturday night or Sunday morn ing from 'David Dwinn, 140(1 Monroe avenue, was recovered today by state police at Enter prise. Two boys, 10 and1 14, both of La Grande, have been arrostod and are being held in Enterprise.
