dustrial shares again led the stock
market Into new high' ground for
more than eight years today with
volume increasing.
A long list gained one to more
than 2 points. Steel, automobile,
department store, aircraft, tobac
cos, and amusement issues were
in the forefront. Rails joined the
rise and the rail equipment also
moved ahead.
Demand for stocks was based
on a bright outlook for the post
reconversion period and hence
traders paid only passing atten
tion to strikes and other current
problems. Leading steels made
new highs despite a drop of more
than 7 per cent in steel output
caused by coal mining stoppages,

rying the blaze over several hun
dred acres to threaten highways

beauty. Fire crews were stand
ing by with residents of the beach

Forestry officials were attempt
ing to keep the highway open for

trying to fence the blaze in. The
fire started several days ago in
logging slash.
FLAMES SWEEPING
COLUMBIA FOREST
VANCOUVER, Wash., Oct. 8
(UP) Flames wcro sweeping
over more than 1,000 acres of the
Columbia national forest, north
cast of here, as a strong cast wind
whipped up the fire today.
The fire, starting Sunday, was
raging between Gumbolt lookout
and the Tatoosh hills. Only 65
men were reported fighting the
fire, which was blown from snug
to snag by a hot, dry wind, and
forest service officials were clam
oring for more help.

Rosenow, Wisconsin, was arrested
by city police last night on
charges of duunkeness and Inde
cent exposure. Ray White, Dun
can, was arrested on charge of
being drunk. Both men are be
ing held for city court today.
ACCIDENT Automobiles
driven by FThomas W. Wade,
Baker, and Lilllo Pearl Crawor,
Portland, collided last night on
highway 30 six miles west of La
Grande. Damage is estimated at
$5 for the Wade car, and $50 for
Miss Crawer's.
