Kin cald today denied Charlie Chap lin's motion for a new trial of Joan Barrs paternity case against him. His attorney, Charles E. Milli kan, had asked the court for a third trial of her charge. The first resulted in a hung jury and the second left Chaplin the child's legally declared father and pay ing $75 a week for her support. Chaplin still has 10 days to ap peal to a higher coi-rt. Corvallis Man's Rose is Finest PORTLAND, Ore., June 6 (UP) This rose, by any other name, would still 1 be a winner. It is the Victory rose, entered in the 57th annual Portland rose show and winner of first prize. It was entered by Paul W. Miller of Corvallis. Robert Taylor Is Film Commentator Robert Taylor, former movie star who now is a lieutenant in the navy, is the commentator In the color motion picture "The Fighting I.ndy," which is fea tured on' the current bill at the Liberty theater. The film was taken under ac tual combat conditions and show3 ships and fighting wilh enemy the bombing of Jap bases and fighter and bombing planes. The American planes involved are those from an aircraft carrier which for reasons of security is called "The Fighting Lady.'' On the same bill is the story of a small girl and her playmates who defy the U. S. army. It is titled "My Pfll, Wolf." Annuel Budget For City Schools Shows Increase (Continued from Page 1) mills, leaving the total taxes to be paid at approximately the same figure as last year. This will depend on the assessed valu ation of all property in the school district as set by the county as sessor. , The year's total figure of $132, 248.75 represents an increase in levy over last yenr of $6,808.44. Total levy which is allowable for the school district under the 6 per cent limitation is $132,264.80. The school district enjoys an especially healthy condition in possession of reserve funds made possible under the law for post war purposes. Funds not shown in the budget but on hand were a total of $20,464.36 in the special leserve fund under the 1943-1945 state law; a total of $20,929 un der the special five mill levy authorized by the voters of the district on April 21, 1944, to be used for construction and equip ment of seriously needed build ings in the school system, and a cash working fund permitted un der state law of $3,500. Members of the budget com mittee included the school board, Claude Berry, chairman, C. W. Bunting, Foster Sims, W. B. Star nier, and Lester Kingsley, and the appointed committee, Homer Leffel, chairman, T. B. Salmon, Trove Lumsdcn, W. C. Perkins and M. C.
