TO COM HAT DROUTH
One of the brightest ideas brought forward in Washington
in n long time seems to be that suggestion for a great "shelter
belt" of trees to minimize drouth in western farm lands and
to prevent dust storms. This scheme, now under considera
tion by the president, is a fine example of the sort of thing
that human beings can do to improve the climatic conditions
under which they live.
As tentatively outlined, it would call for the planting of a
great belt of trees a licit 100 miles wide, and reaching from
the Canadian border to the Texas Panhandle, stretching 1300
miles through the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, and Okla
homa. This bolt would not Ik? solidly wooded. First there
would be a strip of trees, then
then another strip of trees,
so on, throughout the 100 miles of its width.

To be sure. It would cost money, but as long as we are spending as we
are. It Is well to spend on things rth while. Mr. Pack estimates the
cost of this project at I7a.000.00a. The Job would take from 10 to 12 years
to finish, and would call tor services of thousands of workers. Money

CAMPAIGN TO BE
LAUNCHED SOON
A state -by -state nation-wide cam
paign of education, stressing the Importance-
to tho consumer, the pro
ducer, and the trade of the National
Pood and Grocery Distributors' Code,
will be launched In August by the
national code authority for that In
dustry. C. If. Jassen. executive chair
man of the national body, announced
today In a telegram to Laster King
sley, head of the La Grande area code
authority.
The Janssen telegram read as fol
lows:
"By authority of a resolution
adopted by the National Pood and
Grocery Distributors' Code Authority,
a nation-wide campaign of education
by means of forty-eight eta te-wide
conference of local food code au
thorities will be launched about the
middle of August and continue into
October. Conferences will be attend
ed by at least one member of the
national code authority wirt one
member of Its executive staff, and
will be held In each state under the
auspices of the state code authority.
Attendance of a member of the N. R.
A. administration staff Is hoped for.
' Representatives of all local code
authorities are urgently requested to
attend, and special Invitations will
be Issued for attendance by repre
sentatives of consumer, producer and
labor groups and oy the public at
large. ,
"The purpose of the campaign Is to
present the advantages that have ac
crued to the nation as well as to the
trade Itself during the eight months
of operation under the code."
Definite announcement will be
made later as to the time and place
of the Oregon conference.
MINOR CRASH
HERE TUESDAY
Cars driven by B. F. Lenta and Mrs.
Bess Warner Cook figured In a minor
collision on Adams avenue between
Fir and Greenwood Tuesday. They
reported a third car, which did not
stop, contributed to the accident, but
was not hit itself. No one was hurt.

Visit La Grande
According to advice Just received
by Bunting Tractor company, local
dealers for Caterpillar Tractor Co.,
one of the new "Caterpillar" Diesel
powered, tandem drive auto patrols
will visit La Grande over the week
end.
Four of these machines started
from the "Caterpillar" factory In Peo
orla. Illinois on July 9 and a fifth
machine from Salt Lake City, lor a
tour under their own power through
every state of the union, making a
working demonstration of road main
tenance In each important city and
In all national parks, forest reserves
and Indian reservations, to state,
county, city and federal officials and
road contractors.
Number 5 machine, which will ar
rive In La Grande Saturday morn
ing, has already covered several hun
dred miles since It started from Salt
lake City. It was being demonstrated
in Boise Wednesday to officials of the
state of Idaho and others In that
vicinity who are interested In road
maintenance. A showing of the ma
chine to county officials was made
in Ontario this afternoon. Fri
day afternoon a demonstration will
be given in Baker for city and coun
ty officials and the personnel of the
Whitman national forest.
Upon arrival here Saturday morn
ing fhe machine will be demonstrated
during the remainder of the day near
town. Those interested in seeing it
perform are invited to inquire at the
office of Bunting Tractor company, i
located at 1426 Jefferson avenue, for
