Hlafeeslec (Associated Press Science Editor) CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ,() The fact that a suit of clothes creaks with every movement of the body Is re vealed by a super-sound deteotor at the Harvard university physics lab . oratory. When this supersonic listener 'Is turned, on In a room perfectly quiet to the ear, the air la filled with noises. They are supersounds, air waves vibrating at 20,000 or more a second, too high to be audible to the human ear. . Hllence Is Its 'Racket The liaises arise apparently from every kind of motion, however slight. Among these supersounds the creak ing of a good suit of clothes Is among the noisiest. Stand In front of the mechanical listener and. slowly bend one elbow. "Grrump," goes the racket of the flaxlng fabric and keeps up this sound SB Jong as the arm 4a in mo tion. Light a match, and' above the soft flare whloh is audible to the ear the supersonic instrument picks up an other noise resembling the distant rumblo of a street car. Rubbing the : palms of the hands together omits a stream of these sounds. Tearing a Dlece of paper sounds like far-off machine gun fire. Sli-hi (fillet, Mease A, roomful of men trying to remain entirely aulet registers on the super sonic device like the noises of a herd of elephants. ' - This detector, designed by Dr. G. W. Pierce, Rumford professor of plvy sics, la part of an extensive investl- eatlon of supersounds. In the air these' inaudible waves travel farther than ordinary sounds. They also are, transmitted by the other substances which carry normal sound, suggest ' ing 'possible uses for signalling. Alaska, haa been rained from a depth of 365 feet to within 100 feet of the surface. water they ean bo heard nearly 10 miles. . Music Transmission I'otwllile Music can toe transmitted over a specially arranged supersound beam. For this Dr. Pierce uses the inaudi ble sound of a Galton whistle, which sends out vibrations at the rate of about 25,000 a second. When the listening device is turned to the whistle It makes a high, clear note. But when a phonograph record Is connected electrically 1 with the whistle, the clear note modulates to carry faithfully every variation In sound of a full orchestra. These modulations are all In U' nersound frequencies, so!' that ithe music cannot be heard except wnen the listening device 1b cut In to re ceive the whistle and reduce Its high frequencies to the audible range. BENNETT PAYS $25 FINE ON GAME CHARGE Alvin Bennett, of La Grande, paid a fine of $25 and costs In the Justice of peace court yesterday on charges of hunting fur bearing animals with out a license. The charge was brought by the state police, who Eaid Bennett had been trapping beaver, nlthough no pelts were found at' the time of' hls arrest .or on a search of the house where ho resides. An odd-appearing gray rock which has been shedding a dusty fungus for 16 years without apparent shrink age Is owned by a Portland, Ore., col lector. Oollfornia's division of state lands estimates the value of the oil In the state pool at Huntington Beach as In excess of 50,000,000. THOSE STWIS ITS SOMNA BBIWS BACK. XISTORV FELLA?
