Monday, -November 27, 1933 LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER, LA GRANDE, ORE. Page Three STANFORD WILL PLAY ROSE BOWL GAME NEW YEAR'S By Russell J. Newtnnu BAN FRANOI6CO, Nov. 37 VPI Toward football- battlefields across the continent Stanford turned today for tne opponent It will lace New Year's day In Pasadena In the Rose Bowl clamlo that annually comes closest to determining the country's mythical football champion. Preliminary steps In the negotia tions to select a representative team from the eastern half of the nation found the ' undefeated and untied elevens of Princeton and Army as those unofficially favored In. a list that includes Michigan and Duke universities. , While those In charge prepared to weigh the claims of outstanding pros pective opponents, Stanford students continued their Jubilee over the 7-3 win from California that earned the Cardinals a tie with Oregon for the conference title. Both Stanford and Oregon com pleted the conference schedule with four wins, one' defeat and no ties. Stanford, however, defeated Southern California, 13-7, whereas Oregon lost to Southern California, 26-0. Ore gon State also finished Its confer ence with only one defeat but was " tied once. Southern California has one conference game to play, against Washington, Dec. 9, but Is expected to win that contest to end up with a record that includes one defeat and one tie. In the only other conference gome 'Saturday Washington State defeated Washington 17-6. In a non-conference encounter University of Califor nia at L"s Angeles fell 22 to 14 be fore St. Mary's. A Thanksgiving day game will see Washington State and the University of California at Los Angeles Bruins wind up their conference schedules. Other teams, except Washington and Southern California, have completed theirs. , Oregon and St. Mary's will meet in their annual game, Thursday in San Francisco, while Idaho will pair off with Gonzaga at Spokane in another interesting encounter. Gould The balance of All-America foot ball power remains in the Middle i West,, whether or not the East and s,.Soiith like, lt,pr.the For jWes pares, to admit it. ; This situation seems fair enough, for the lntersectlonal record of the teams scattered over the plains from the Alleghenles to the Missouri Val ley Is as good this year as anything we have ever noticed. They must have the talent. The Big Ten Is tho "toughest league" in college fotball, the Pacific Coast conference included. There are no set-ups In the Big Six or among a dozen other teams of the "Inde pendent" class, such as Detroit, Mich igan State and Marquette. The only door-mat among the big mid-western teams this year, strangely enough, Is Notre Dame, but even this Is no sign of Inherent .weakness or a sudden lack of man-power. West Lands Linemen The Far West this year emphasizes its line play, especially among the California "Big Three." The North west's answer to this is that Stanford, California, U. O. L. A. and Southern California have no ballcarrles of the calibre of Mlkuluk and Temple of Oregon or Bed Franklin of Oregon State. In the South, the backs have been getting most all of the ballyhoo that has not otherwise 'been concentrated on Duke's great tackle, Freddie Craw ford. Grant and Key of Georglc, Roberts and Bryan of Tulane, Howell of Alabama, Feathers of Tennessee, Kercheval of Kentucky, Dixon of Vanderbilt and Earl Clary of South Carolina who can also claim the distinction of coming from Brian Bell's home-town of Oaffney have been grabbing the headlines in Dixie. The East, too, has been notewor thy manly for its backficld produc tion, including the whole Army back field and Individual stars like Dan owskl of Fordham, Lasslter of Yale. Montgomery of Columbia, Clark of Dartmouth, LeVan of Princeton and Randour of Villanova. Beating Bark No matter whether the corn grow ' ers of the Hawkeye state are staging a come-back or not, the University of Iowa's football fortunes definitely have moved back Into the upper level this season. "The depression hit with its full force on that May morning in 1929 when Iowa's argument with the Western Conference became an open break and a matter of public record." recalls one of our Iowa scouts' "A lot of water has gone over the dam since then, however, and Ossie Solem took command and in his second year produced a team that has a vast majority of the commonwealth's population chinning about football on the street corner, the drug foun tain and the cigar store. "It lias all been a pleasant revela tion to the thousands of citizens who had all but forgotten football be cause of the situation at Iowa City. Somewhere the boys acquired new life, the old defeatism attitude was wiped out and along came Dick Crayne to give the club the required spark. Solem, of course, deserves the major share of the credit." All of which leads to the sugges tion that Captain Tom Moore, Iowa's center, and Francis (Zud) Scham mel, Iowa's right guard, are two of the main Individual reasons for the Hawkeye showing and two of the Big Ten's offerings In the All-America debate. "One of the judges wrote only the Initial of who he thought won the Leighton-Hutchlnson bout. He claim ed lit was an H for Hutchinson, but it looked like a letter L to me and inasmuch as I believed the two Judges had disagreed I awarded the bout to Leighton by a oiose margin," Russell commented.
