LAGGING IN SOCIAL PROGRESS "'"if the social .s.ciences only could catch up with medical science, this ought to be a pretty fair sort of world before very long. Dr. George W. Ciile of Cleveland, a medical man who sees visions and dreams dreams in the laboratory where he examines the riddles of life and death, told the recent congress of the American College of 'Surgeons that the hu man rape will be a much finer and healthier outfit inside of a century. Dqctors then will prevent disease rather than cure it; : indeed, the doctor who has to treat a disease will have to confess that .he has failed in his duty of preventing its-in ception. Such plagues as diphtheria, typhoid, smallpox, malaria, and typhus will be eliminated ; .tuberculosis, diabetes and most diseases of the heart will be mastered; cancer and the social diseases wi)l be reduced sharply, and childbirth will be nvide safe. And yet Dr. Crile does .not believe .that ,tfiis healthy race of 8033 A. D. will be a very happy one. The .race, he believes, will be .menaced inpreasingly by the development of tech nology. The pace pf .day-to-day jiving will .continue to in crease, so that there will be more disorders of the mind and the nervous system than ever before. , ,v. , This bit of prophecy seems to indicate that we have mas tered just abqut every science except the simple and homely one of conducting every-day affairs so that human beings can be happy instead of unhappy. We can conquer the toughest problems the physical world has to offer us, but we can't seem to solve the simplest riddles of human nature. We ride jn airplanes and automobiles instead of the spring less ox-carts of primitive man, we tunnel under mountains and dam up rivers and cure disense and weigh the stars and send our voices across the seas. But when it comes to the business of getting along .with one another, and giving every human being a decent break in life, we doiM seem to be very much wiser than the citizens of Augustan Rome. ,! The great untouched field before us today is the field of human relations. The groat problem is the one of putting our triumphs in the physical sciences to work so that they can provide the greatest good for the greatest number. i The doath of Pat Foley, popular lo cal hotel man, came as a shock to rthla community, despite the f act that It had been known ior a week that ho was desperately 111. Everyone had been hoping that the magnificent physique and iron constitution with which Foley was endowed, would en- ablo him to successfully combat the deadly malady that had laid him low. Pat Foley made a valiant fight, but death was not to bo denied. He suc oumbed to spotted lever Saturday at 11 p. m. Indication -of the high regard In which Mr. Foley was Jield here may be seen In the proclamation closing all stores today during the funeral, and resolutions of condolence passed by local civic organizations In whieh tile deceased took an active part. This sorrow Is shared 'by everyone in The Dalles who knew Mr. Foley, Less than -throe weeks ago Mr. Foloy was a member of a party of deer hunters, who camped In the Suplee district for several days. Al ways a vigorous, out-door man, Mr. Foley enjoyed the outing Immensely and did not realize that ho had been bitten by a tick. It was not until several days after he returned home that the dread spotted fever developed.
