Princess Elizabeth continues to In
fluence classic little girl fashions,
with a Kemp tweed coat, shaped In
at the waistline and strictly tailored
with velveteen trimmings. A bslmmed
hat with velveteen trimming to
match completes the ensemble.
Coats In the English manner have
long been a favorite with their Yan
kee cousins across the sea. Trim
it nee, careful tailoring and sturdy
fabrics are three fundamentals of a
practical coat lor the, active school
girl. The English fashions that have
found favor here embrace all three
of these virtues; plus an ability to
cope with all kinds of , weather. The
sailor coat, out oft- the English
fashion, has a matching hat and had
an eye on English winters In the
making. The red flannel lining, how
ever, Is no less appropriate here
"when the north wind shall blow and
we shall have snow."
And so the English Influence con
tinues to be felt In important girl
- coat fashions for fall and winter.
However, young America has hot de
serted the army and navy. The regu
lation coat with brass buttons, sleeve
chevrons and a sea-going air Is a
. perennial classic .that has lost none ;
of ' Its. jaunty Importance. It has
proven Its practical, wearable quail
; ties and deserves to continue as the
, backbone of coat wardrobes. '
-The military influence is apparent
In smart tweed coats, with notched
. collars and belted waistlines In the
beet army tradition.
-The oalmacaan has no impressive
origin; out it is an ageless favorite
that endures. Balmacaans in mixture
woolens are ready to stand any
amount of wear and tear. Leather
buttons add to the general air or
ruggedness. And with a hat to match,
the tout ensemble takes a new 'lease
on life and Is ready to rough It, and
be very little the worse for .wear.
For kindergarteners and young
hopefuls up to six years, three piece
outfits are the accepted, .practical
trio. Coat, leggings and hat to match
assure an appearance of harmony and
put-togetherness. New Interest, how
ever. Is Introduced In brimmed hats
Instead of the usual cloches. This
innovation has much In Its favor, as
wide 'brims have a way of adding
piquancy to stray curls.
Two piece sets for the older girl,
graduate from the leggings class. The
two pieces are a coat and matching
muff. The muff has Its practical val
ue on. frosty days and Is a real stim
ulant for dignified, ladylike deport
ment. The fashion story of the new sil
houette for all ages commences at
the waist and extends upward and
outward toward- the shoulders. Girls'
fashions enthusiastically fall In line
with squared shoulders thatr are -Jtrig
but not exaggerated. Square epaulets
are new and smart. Detail of extended
pieces ending in points go up In the
world of fashion by achieving height
as well as width.

Coats' Featured
For Young Girls

' A compromise with fashion and
serviceability Is achieved for the -limited
wardrobe in an increasing variety
of "In between coats" for the young
girl. Quality detail and careful tail
oring have a way of looking just
right any hour of the day. The "in
between" coat has its foundation In
good lines. Tailored, but not severe;
with novelty woolens to add a dressy
appareance, the "ln-beetween" coat is
sufficiently conservative for every day
wear but eually suitable for more
dressy occasions.
Shawl and mushroom collars pre
dominate in fall and winter showing
of girls' coats. The importance 01
tweeds has added prestige to the al
ways popular raccoon collar. Lynx
dyed wolf Is another long haired tui
repeatedly seen. Australian opossum
la softer and more adaptable for the
mushroom type collar.
Short haired furs are confined
largely to borders, edgings and scarfs.
Notch collars of short haired fur are
very smart to complement rougher
woolens. French beaver, leopard and
ocelot manipulate almost as well as
fabrics and are favored for fall 'trim
ming detail.
Fabric Interest adds zest to new
fall and winter girls' coat fashions.
Tweeds are tremendously import
ant. Novelty versions verge upon a
dressy appearance; but cling to their
ability to wear and wear. Kemp
swecds have a decided place In the
fashion picture, assured by the en
dorsement of the little Princess Eliza
beth. Boucle tweeds are also among
those present, with a grand nubby
finish that refuses to look rumpled
whether school keeps or not. Check
ed tweeds of the Harris typo have
never "checked out" of the fashion
picture. They ere as right as rain;
and rain, incidentally, doesn't stand
a chance with a good tweed ot any
description.
Chevron and stripe weaves ore the
last word In fabric smartness.
Suede woolens In fine needle-point
variations are usually classed with
dressier type coats; but the trend to
ward ooats that are really doublo
duty has brought suedo woolens Into
prominence.
Camel's hair cloth Is still to the
fore for regulation types and has
much to recommend It In the way
of all-around ability to kcop up ap
pearances. COTTON GLOVES
Cotton gloves cont i nue to keep
their fashion Importance well in
hand. Cottons with a silky finish and
cottons with a woolly finish are Im
portant. Weave and color add new
ness, such as waffle weaves and
geometries. Black, gray, brown and
beige are leading colors. Plpln? for
contrast Is smart, but it Is smartest
when applied sparingly.

Brood shoulders have a magic way
of making the waist and hips look
slimmer. The fall silhouette con
tinues to endorse shoulder width,
which ls a great deal to be thankful
for. as It 1b a fluttering ffashlon. The
trend Is toward modified' broad shoul
ders that have an eye on height as
well as width.
The "puffed out" shoulder line
In the leg-o-mutton tradition of
spring and summer has been rele
gated to the past from which It
sprang. Shoulder width for fall Is
more subtle and less exaggerated.
Sleeves are terribly important to
achieve a -"squared-off" shoulder
appearance. Width you must have;
and height, too but no cascades of
frilly ruffles or billowing. . balloon
sleeves. - -
Dressmaker details of cordlngs,
pipings, rolls and folds are used im
portantly, but with restraint, to
achieve this modified shoulder width.
Intricate cut at the top of the sleeve
to form points ls a new and interest
ing trick fashion has up her sleeve.
Folds to obtain fullness are very, very
new and If you crave elbow room,
this same treatment repeated at the
wrist as well as at the shoulder,
will give a sweeping, oval line that
ls both graceful and comfortable.
Skirts are doing tilings for fall.
The fitted waistline, the molded hip
line endorse the sheath silhouette;
but hemlines grow Interesting. The
modified shoulder width repeats it
self surprisingly ot the hemline.
The cordlngs, pipings, rolls and
folds used to give the squarcd-off
shoulder effect are used again to
animate hemlines. .The fullness
storts Just above the ankle and flares
outward. And therein lies the secret
of the new silhouette; widened shoul
ders are balanced by widened, skirt
bases. This trend ls present In even
the most conservative fall fashions.
Low placed pleats or flares give a
widened hemline to correspond with
shoulder width.
Instead of concentrating all the
interest in a top-heavy appearance,
as In the spring; the fall fashions
divide the honors between shoulders
and hemline; but with related detail
and treatment that moulds the entire
silhouette Into a flowing, continuous
line.
Hick necklines continue Important
for fall; but they are no longer a
hard and fast rule. The line ls soft
er and more versatile. The high,
cowl neckline Is tremendously smart
for afternoon dresses; and ls flatter
ing and easy to wear.
Convertible necklines offer a stim
ulating variety of prestochango pos
sibilities. There are high necklines
that open to form .reverses., with con.-,
trosting color or fabric on the under
side. The changed neckline and the
new color accent thus achieved ls
almost equivalent to another dress.
Sailor collars, reminiscent of child
hood days, have grown up to be an
important fashion. They give a
smart "squared-off" appearance, and
are full of surprises. Many are de
tachable, and some are made of fur.
The Increasing Importance of the
two-piece dress for fall should be
welcomed with hurrahs and thanks
giving. A more comfortable, wear
able fashion has never been Invented.
The line Is slimming to all figures,
which is good news for the larger
woman.
The tunic dress for daytime and
afternoon heads the list of fall ver
sions of the two-piece dress, andt ls
wearable all around the clock for the
busy business woman. Unlimited
possibilities for interesting color and
fabric contrast give the tunic dress
promts for an exciting career. Tunic
dresses also appear in the guise of
rcd-lngotcs, with .all the practical
features of this most versatile ot
fashions. .
Boleros are back I And boleros
have a way of adapting themselves
to fashions for all ages. Jacket cos
tumes are a boon to the limited ward
robe, and the very faot that the bole
ro version of the two-piece theme
boasts a Jacket Insures its Immediate
acceptance.
Satin ls the shining light for fall
and winter. Black satin has a cor
ner on smartness for afternoon wear.
The elegance of the fabric, plus the
sheath silhouette, are a combination
guaranteed to achieve the ultimate in
sleek, flowing lines. After a summer
of frivolous cottons, a satin dress
will do much to make you feel the
grand lady.
Rlbbed silks, such as faille and
bengallne are also very important.
They are at their best for afternoon
dresses, Jackets and formal blouses.
The vertical line of the ribbing has
a slimming effect because It achieves
an Illusion of lengthened line, and
added height.
Satin refuses to be left out of any
corner of the fashion picture, and rib
bed satin takes Its place In the lead
er group of ribbed fabrics that are
making fall and winter fabric fashion
history. ,

Necklines have been creeping up
on us, and -the current trend toward,
fashions of the 1900's reminiscent of
the boned "ohoker" collar Is respon
sible for the standing collar,
Tho modern version of the stand
ing collar Is a "collar" In name only
upstanding .bands of braid, fur or
folds of fabrio ' reach across from
shoulder to shoulder, and do their
fencing with necklines merely as a
ion to accentuate shoulder width.
"Curved Is the line of 'beauty"
and scalloped detail follows the curve
of beauty for new gloves.
Scallop outlines In the shape of
cuffs may require Just two blg scal
lops to complete their smartness; or
may go In for a long line of little
scallops. Scallops are not confined to
cuffs, however. They also furnish
stitching motifs for up and down the
back of the glove in, rippling color
contrasts.
Dropped shoulder lines for evening,
baring the shoulders yet covering the
upper arm, are very courtly and for
mal In feeling. The "sleeve" Is
achieved Iby puffs or folds which give
a broadened line in keeping with the
square shoulder silhouette. Narrow
shoulder straps onhanoe the bared
Shoulder effect, which Is very femin
ine and flattering.

One of the most striking results of
the application of the NBA as ap
plied to the furniture Industry, Is
the fact that many, if not all of the
real low prloed, Sow quality so-called
bargain pieces of furniture riave been
raised so much in price that they are
now in many cases as much in pries
as Higher grades of furniture, prices
of whloh have not been affected to
nearly as great an amount as the for
mer. This ls due largely to the fact that
In order to meet the demands of the
publlo during and shortly before the
depression, many maufaoturers placed
their plants on almost a "sweat shop"
basis. What was formerly a skilled
workman was replaced with other la
bor at around 17 cents an hour wage.
This low wage was reflected In the
29.50 davenport and ohalr and the
19.50 bedroom suits. Now, under the
new code this type ot manufacturer
must pay his help 40 osnta an hour
or more.
At the same time, throughout the
depression period, there were others
ot what are recognized as the better
olass of manufacturer, who all along
were paying their factory men 65
cents an hour and more. Naturally
the advent of taie code has not great
ly Increased this type of manufac
turers merchandise. Ho put out sterl
ing quality products right along.
With these facts in mind the man
or woman who is interested in the
purchase of furniture should look
now, perhaps more critically than
ever,- to the question ot "how good"
rather than "how muoh."
