Sport Slants Iy Alan J. Gould After examining the amazing re turns from tho national collegiate track and field championships at Chicago, wliero a negro schoolboy from Cleveland, Jesse Owens, equalled Ralph Metcalfe's and world record timo of 0.4 seconds for 100 yards. you couldn't blame an enthusiast for writing us as follows: "At that rate, how soon will it bo before some young fellow, under per fect conditions and perhaps a 'rolling Starr sprints 100 yards In 0 sec onds flat? Doesn't It seem entirely possible to you, considering the way world records In almost every event navo been knocked off? "Who would have figured Ted Mer edith's quartor-mllo record would bo smashed to bits in one year, not by just ono but by two runners, East man and Corr? Who would have fig ured thrco runners within a yeitr would surpass Faavo Nurml's famous 4:10 2-5 mllo record? I rofer to La doumcguc, Venzko and Cunningham. "Whoever considered It possible for the 120 yard high hurdles to be ne gotiated In 14 seconds flat? It hasn't been done yet, but two young men liavo been clocked within only one tenth second short of -that time and they will no doubt bo down there beforo long, what's tho limit, U there is any?" lluiiil Timing I do not quostlon tho sincerity or experience of most of our timers. know a number of men who have held stop-watches for two-score years, "K0 Mortimer Bishop and the old master, Col. Charles J. Dlcges, with- Out fear, favor nv a tromhlft tit. T also happen to know that the con alsttmcy of hand -timing, generally, as compared with electrical or automat ic timing, is subject to consiclcrabln question. This seems to us to bo elementary. Proponents of luintl -timing mny say you cant go wrong by taking the average of wluit five watches in ftvo experienced hands say. Maybe so, but laboratory cxerlments, as well as the IClrby "camera clock," tested and proved, havo shown somo rather startling comparisons with stop-watch timing. In general, tho hand-timing has been foster, although It may fluctuate either way, Tho fact that such fluctuation nc tually exists Is enough to subject many stop-watch recordings to ques tion. It seems to us that the substi tution of electric timing for all our big championship moots, at least, is tho only answer to developing real accuracy and confldouco. It may Jolt somo of tho boys, but It may also prove the current genera tion of speedsters, like Metcalfe, Owens, Hornbostel, Bonthron, Cun ningham and Vonzkc is really faster than the watches so fax havo given them credit for. Nut III '1'hls Life To our somewhat astigmatic vision, the "nine-second 100" is no nearer being achieved now than It was when Arthur Duffey first dashed tho dls Utnco In 0.6 seconds. It has taken over 30 years for sprinters liko Simpson, Wykoff and Me teal fo to flash past tho tape In 0.4, with or without starting blocks, I doubt if any of tho thrco really ran faster than Duffey. It will take at least another 00 years, plus a springboard, wings and an nirplnno motor, for any human be ing to do 9 seconds flat. ttXIM.ONlON WItKCKH CITY LONU BEACH. Col. NEW YORK, Juno 30 UP) Under clrcumitances that still seemed baf fling and somewhat Incredible today w ai. least a Bnare or the fight fra ternity, Primo Camera, the 25-vear- oid, 200 pound Italian giant, who was Just a "strong man" In a circus sideshow a ' few years ago, stood astride the boxing world llko a mod ern Colossus as the new heavyweight cnampion. With one mighty swoop of his ham. like right fist, Camera took the title from Jock Sharkey, 201 pound Am erlcan, on a knockout In the sixth round of a 16 -round match last eve ning. , . he finish came with a sudden ness that was as dramatic as It was startling to a crowd of 35,000 soec. tators, little more than half filling the Madison Square Oarden bowl. An Inside right uppercut, brought up swiftly as the giant came to grips aiong tne ropes with his foe, foiled Biiarkoy as though he hod been a tree hit by tho woodman's final blow. The champion fell to the canvas, race down. There was no question about the power behind Camera's final thrust, the climax of a spectacular closing flurry that saw tho champion flound er suddenly, lose almost complete control of his defense and crumple uuuer tne ponaerous punches of the biggest man who ever scaled the world heavyweight heights. Yet up to the finish. Sharkey was the master of his gargantuan rival. Tne champion started slowly and lost tne first round, taking at least one hard right hand; clout on the chin, but he seemed unhurt and for the next four rounds gave Camera a box. Ing lesson. HUSKIES' COACH PREDICTS CREW WILL WIN RACE By Al Ulbrlckson X'nlv. of Washington Crew Coacli As Told To Frank Uorrls i (Associated Press Sports Writer) BEATTLE, June 29 UP) One way to moke a sap of oneself is to pub licly pick the winner of a crew race. lot alone prophesy all tho places in a big regatta, but I'm willing to take tne chance. In the sprint rowing classic at Long Beach. Cal., July 7 and 8. I look 'for Cornell and the University of Califor nia! at Loe Angeles to be, eliminated In the trial heats the first day, with tno finalists to finish In this order (. 1 Washington; S--Yale; 3 Cali fornia; 4 lliu-vurd. Fears Lender's Crew The Huskies will have to be at their best, however, to keep ahead of tho Yalo outfit. Ed Leader has a great band of oarsmen, but tho Bulldogs will have to be faster than last year If they are to carry the title back to New Haven. Washington came within 1 1-5 sec onds of tying the Italian Olympic games record of 6 minutes, 28 2-5 seconds for the Long Beach course when tho Huskies defeated. California and U, C. L. A. two months ago, and wo won't be any slower in this next race. By the time we reach Long Beach, Yale may have a 50-50 chance. I un derstand the Ell covered two miles In 10 minutes, 23 seconds. This Is 17 seconds better than Washington's best practice time, but Yale rowed on a river while we pulled over still water. California will bo, much better and may spring a surprise. All of us will havo to watch out for the Bears. With new men In his boat. They use the long reach and long laybock system because of their three and four-mile races and will have to change their style for tno 2.000-meter regatta. Curley Harris, Washington's former coxswain who has boon visiting ln the east, tells me that Cornell has good material but so far has failed to click. Prefers Three Miles U. O. L. A. undoubtedly will be bet ter than In April, but the newcomers to the rowing sport have a long1 way to go before they can be contenders. I am glad to see this race and none it Is held every year, but I like the longer distance for determining the national title. I have always felt that three miles was the fairest race but as long as the Olympic championship Is decided over 2.000 meters I guess this regatta Is right enough. Ho much depends on tho start In tho sprint events. One . little slip might put tho best crew out. At three miles a good eight can make up for a mistake. Why Use a Bladder Physic?
