Thursday, June 29, 1933 LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER, LA GRANDE, ORE. Page Three ROCKEFELLER AND MITCHELL BOTH ON KUHN STOCK LIST WASHINGTON, June 20 P) Charles' E. Mitchell and Percy A. Rockefeller .were listed today among Individuals who, senate Investigators were told. Were Invited to share In profits (rom floating securities Issued by Kuhn, Loeb & company. Ferdinand Pecora, counsel, placed before the Investigating committee a long list or prominent figures In the Industrial world Invited to parti cipate In .the profits. The list was similar to the selected client lists of J. P. Morgan and com pany., but operated differently. Pecora advocated a government In vestigation to determine why an in ternal revenue bureau official changed the classification of an In come tax reducing stock sale by Otto Ipihn from a "wash sale" to "an ordinary transaction on the ex change." Pecora made this suggestion after the committee had received testi mony from Kahn, senior partner of Kuhn, Loeb and company, giant New York banking bouse, that be had paid a foreign Income tax In 1030 when he paid none In this country. Kahn said the tax was $4480 and he assumed It was paid in arcat Britain. The senate investigators also were told that the government granted Kahn an Income tax reduction In 1030 on stock sales without know ledge that the securities were sold to his daughter, Mrs. Maud E. R.As He Heads North LAKEMANS BAY, Maine, July 20 W) It was "anchors aweigh" today' for President Roosevelt as he left this place to start the final leg of his cruise to Compobello Island In New .Brunswick. Desplto the persist ent fog which -limited visibility to approximately 100 yards, tho Amber Jock II, with the president at the wheel, slid northward toward the final goal. COMPROMISE BY BRITISH CHUCKED OUT (Continued From Page One) London government stated they could not commit themselves to any ar rangement which left America out side stabilization. Things looked brighter for a wheat restriction agreement. The Australian n central government accepted the prjn v.clplevand asked ton help, tft.cojiymc- Ing the Australian states of Its necessity; Tho French proposed that the London conference bring about agreements which would pool all com mercial shipping In a combine op erating with one account for receipts and expenses. NO STABILIZATION CONSIDERED WASHINGTON, June 29 P Dean Acheson, under-secretary of the treas ury, told reporters today no action Was being considered in Washington regarding stabilization of the dollar and nothing had been done in this respect since President Roosevelt re jected tho temporary stabilization proposal forwarded from tho London conference some days ago. PLAN VOTE AT ELECTION ON JULY 21 mission, would result In a savings of trom 412,000 to 413,000 per annum to La Grande taxpayers this amount being paid to the light and power company at present for ' eleotrlclty used for municipal purposes. The power plant would not compete with tho E. O. L. & P. Co. In ony way, but would furnish electricity for the downtown ornamental lighting sys tem, for the sewage disposal plant, the city water pumping system, the city library and the city hall. Arc lights In the residential districts would still be supplied with elec tricity by the E. O. L. & P. Co. as the city haB no distribution system con necting with these. The other pro jects couldl bo linked up with the power plant with practically no addi tional cost, because tho city owns the distribution system for these, the commissioners said. The power plant would -be operated by tho flow of wojer through the pipeline. In effect, It would ollow tho olty to supply Its light and powor for Its municipal uses, and the E. O. L. & P. Co. would continue to supply light and power tor all private In dividuals and businesses and also the city arc lights. The estimate on "the, cost -of re constructing the pipeline and build lug the powor plant was made by L. It. Stockman, of Baker, and A. H. McLnln, of La Grande, and Includes 10 per cent for contingencies, en gineering costs, etc. A resolution was adopted lost night authorising tho estimate. The city special election would cost very llttlo as it is planned to appoint the same Judges and-clerks that will handle the stato special election In the city precincts. ' j SUNDAY SCHOOL PLANS PICNIC The Sunday school of the Baptist church will hold Its annual plcnlo tomorrow afternoon and evening at Riverside park, according to the 'an nouncement made by Mr, Jordahl, superintendent. Oamcs and various forms of ' entortalnment have been arranged for the children during the afternoon, and a plcnlo supper will be served In the evening. - . Children who live on the south sldo of the tracks are to meet at the Baptist church at 3 o'clock, and those on tho north sldo will meet at the Greenwood sohool at the same time. From these places they will bo es corted to the park. The committees In charge announce that the plcnlo will be postponed until a lator date If It should rain tomorrow. Three Ordinances Are Passed by City Dads . (Continued From Page One) ule of license foes follows: Soft drink license, 91 each quarter; card rooms, S for the first table and 2.60 for each additional' table, annually: pool and billiards, $7.60 for first toblo and 5 for each additional table, semi annually, the schodulo also applying to bowling alleys. Tho license foe for shooting galleries Is 1S, payable each six months. Licenses in La Grande expire at midnight Juno 30, and tho above schedule will apply on July 1. - Anothor ordinance gave the city the right to accept city general ob ligation bonds in payment of olty liens and other special assessments and for lands sold by the olty. This conforms with a new act of tho state legislature and gives citizens the op portunity to buy up general obliga tions on the open market and then apply them to their liens, etc, on a par basis. -The third ordinance passed changes the present ordinances on dog licenses in two respects, both conforming with the new state law. The firet change makes it unlawful for anyone to own or keep a dog In tho city limlta without licensing the animal; the second change mokes tho licensing conform . with stato luff, which sets the license for male dogs' at (1 and for femalo dogs 2. After Maa. 1, a penalty or will be added to the license fees this provision, howover, not affecting licenses lasuea In 1033. , : v ' Other business transacted last nlgnt Included the rejection, of an offer of 2S for the city hospital prop erty, the offer being mode by O, O. With a 30 per cent grant and the R. F. C. buying bonds for the remaining 70 per cent, local taxes would not be affected.
