Thursday, Jufy 11, 1932 LA OHANUE EVENINO OBSERVER, LA GRANDE, ORE. Page Seven i li 4 Officers Balked ! In Solving of Reynolds Case WINSTON 8ALEM, N. C, July 14 (iP) The myatery ot Smith Reynolds' death by a gunshot wound a week ago, d?epene-d rather than cleared by a coroner's Inquest, today challenged Forsyth county authorities to solve the most sensational problem they have ever faced. Sheriff Transou Scott, the chief In vestigating officer, let It be known he was seeking to aacertlng the truth in regard to various points about which there was conflict of testimony in the hearing by the coroner's jury. The Jury attributed the young tobaceo heir's death to "a parson or persons unknown to the Jury." , From a member of the Jury, W. T. i Alspaugh, came information that a major factor in the returning of the so-called "open verdict" was testimony that the foreign-made pistol with which the 20-ysar-old youth was shot ! was not found until four hours after the shooting, although the Reynolds ! estate night watchman had made a j thorough search of the scene In the meantime. The pistol was found near the door , between the bedroom of Mrs. Llbby j Holman Reynolds, former Broadway blues singer, and the sleeping porch : on the second floor of Reynolds, the palatial Reynolds family home. It, was on this porch that Smith dropped : with a pistol bullet through hla brain 1 at 1 a, m. lost Wednesday, a few minutes after the breaking up of a gay birthday party at which, wit nesses testified, there was considerable drinking. Officers were reticent in discussing the case, but they said only two ex planations were possible: the night watchman overlooked the gun al though lt3 location was not hidden, or the weapon was placed there -later by some person yet unidentified. The reported discovery of a hole In fthe porch screen, apparently made by o bullet, six feet, six inches above the lloor. my-.itifled officers who minutely 'scrutinized the testimony. Physicians who made an autopsy said the fatal bullet entered Reyn olds' right temple, ranged downward through the head and came out to the rear and below th-a left ear. The question was asked how the bullet could follow a downward course through Reynolds' head and then apparently suddenly make an angle upward in its flight. It was unanswered except on the theory that the youth was lying on the bed, fnco downward, with his left side to the screen at the time the shot was fired. Mallory, bandaged and looking very sick, had remained Indoors, glowering over one highball alter am.ther. HamMou had been en grossed, as usual, In his intermina ble Canfleld. Martin and Williams, raguo. inoffensive figures, drifted like restless wraiths in and out of tho rooms. Nnncy's scalp tightened and prickled whenever she looked Into their ey?. , such depths of mis ery and madness were reflected there, l.ucct and Ashwood had dis cussed business intermittently Willi out, apparently, reaching an en tente cordlale. A faint whisper of coo, wind rat tled the dry palm leaves as the imii. Sin dived unceremoniously be cutli the hard line of the horizon. -.shwood, lounging Indolently a dozen-feet nwuy, Was watching the kaleidoscopic play of colors with an upproclutivo eye. Suddenly, how ever, he sat bolt upright, gazing fixedly across the mile-wide atretcli ot Iridescent water toward the sand bordering the nearest island to the east. He rose, shrilled Ills pjcullar whistle and pointed across to where etched in black against the tinted background of sand, stood a solitary figure, waving a white handkerchief Instantly, It Deemed, a.swlft mo torboat, manned by a crew of three, dashed out ot the camouflaged dock and headed across the channel. Luccl. Mallory, Wilson and Martin emerged from tho house to stand lined up at the porch mil, watching the speeding boat in expectant si lence, speculating Inwardly upon the meaning ot the stranger in the lives of those on the kidnapers' Is land. The mnhogaii" boat coasted up to tho opposite shore, the three men leaped out on the beach and, after n brief parley with the new comer, took him aboard and re turned with him to the boathouse. "What Is responsible for this delightful visit?" . Jerry gazeu at him with astonish ment. Surely this harmlesJ . loklng cripple could not be leader of a bund of kidnaping desperadoes! It would be that battered, saturnine person on his right or the power-fully-built, bandagod fellow on the other side ot the girl. Yet as soon ns tho old-youna man had spoken the guards fell back to a discreet distance where thoy remained, watchful, awaiting further instruc tions. "Sorry to hn butted In like this," replied the flyer, dolefully. "My boat sank and left me all wet, so to speak." "indeed?" Ashwood's voice was mildly sntlrlcjl. "A boat, eh? 1 hud expected -o hear you had come here In search ot a telephone to summon a tire repair crew." "I'm not sure that I like, your tone." observed Jerry, dollberololy. "I am only too glad, however, to otter you our simple hospitality until this bouic what odd but altogether delightful little house-party Lreaks up." He glanced at the others with a sar donic gleam ot amusement. He clapped his bands, after the East ern custom, and a servant appeared. "This Is a new guest, Alfred," ex plained Ashwood, easily. "Find him a room and somo dry clothes. By the way, It might be well It we learned your name. Wo are, as you will presently observe, very I-for-mal lu our dealings with one an other, but we do not go about call ing oach other 'Hey' and 'You.' " "Permit me, theu, to Introduce myself ns Walter Peabody, of New York," bowed Jerry. "A delightful name, I'm sure," saiiled Ashwood affably. "May I in troduce you r our guests? Miss .Vancy Wentwortlj," , j i4 , , Jerry looke,, s. alglit Into Mancy's brown eyes and bowed Imperson al:. Ashwood's keen glan..o did not miss a flicker of his expression, or of hers. "This somewhat careworn gon tleman with Jinr.ll patches of olive skin beneath the white bandages, Mr. or Peabody, Is ono of Chi cago's civic lenders, n monument to the industry which made him botii famous and prosperous, who rejoices in the euphonious name of Ono-shot-l.uccl." Jerry permitted himself a start of surprise and an amnzed glance nt the frowning One-shot. Then he turned abrup"y to Ashwood. who appeared to be thoroughly enjoying himself. (Coyyrlyht.
