Friday, July, 8, 1932 t rhnffl With ' f Chats With v I Parents 1'I.AYlNfl SOLDIER Ily A1IOO Juilson Penis Iarents often are shocked to see what brutal games of make-boileve their children Invent. : Hunting, killing, war. bombard ments, wholesale slaughter of an enemy people rire carried out with the greatest enthusiasm. Dolls and toy animals are stabbed, shot, dismembered, Imprisoned and executed without compassion. The adult watching doea not un derstand how a Child who has been always humanely treated, who has Men little or no cruelty In his life, can come by such Ideas or how he can derive such obvious delight In acting them out. The natural thing Is to try to discourage such play. Usually the attempt falls. Even If it seems to succeed, continued ob servation will show that It surely crops up again In a new although perhaps less direct form. The .young child playing Buch games is merely acting out an ag gressiveness which Is Inevitable un der the circumstances. For many reasons he feels rage arid a sense of frustration for which the actual environment o'ffers him no other outlet. Is he1 riot a child and as such or dered about, thwarted, limited at every turn? MuBt It not be' painfully nlaln a dozen times a day that he is inferior to the great grown-ups who dominate his existence? Somehow he must get even; He ,must Imagine himself since he ciinnot be so in reality in a p'oai- ,inn nt- nnwur nriH ftiif iinflt.v H must revenge the wrongs which his Instinctive, pleasure-seeking self feels that He' has suffered. Considered from a mental hygiene point of vieV, game's of cruelty are a most valuable vent for feelings which might pile" up dangerously and dis charge themselves at lastMn really' undesirable behavior. : PERRY j PERSONALS J 4) Ily IVilda O'Ncll (Observer Correspondent) PERRY (Special) Perry was prac. tlcally deserted the Fourth with most of the people going to the hills.
