The local drop which was forced by extremely liberal lay and a scant outlet, forced extras down to 10c dozen with mediums 14c. The latter continues very weak Inasmuch as tho differential between largo and smaU eggs Is too limited. The fact that the New York mar ket Is now quoting the lowest price over known there for Pacific coast extras, Indicates the plight of the trade of the west coast. Inasmuch as - 1n-rr naff, nt tllft nUITOlUS IS alWSyS marketed In New York Irrespective of the price, the returns available for such shipment are somewhat below tho basis being quoted hero, low as It is. i Tho low price has presented a problem to producers and distributors alike. Culling of flocks and the forcing of many but of tho Industry havo resulted from rocont extreme low record values. Butter market situation in Portland Is very,, firm but distributors are afraid to advance prices through fear of flooding the market with ship ments from distant points. Butter fat is holding steady. Live chicken prices continue very weak along the wholesale way with further fractional changes in tho bids by killers. -Por light weight hens cash offers axe down to 8c, tho low est in history hero. Better - demand Is showing all through the market for dressed tur keys here. Local consumptive call Is excellent at the low price range and thero is a good demand for stor age from eastern Interests. There Is a very keen demand for fancy quality' country killed calves. Prices are being well maintained gen erally. Fancy quality lambs are finding considerable favor with retailers at this period. Quality hogs are also moving' out well. 'Demand for bulls is excellent. There Is very little trading in tho apple market either, for domestic or fnt-nlD1!! lunniint. Exnorta aro much smaller than at this period a year ago while only extreme low prices are confirmed. Talk of better business Is not borno out by surveys of dis tributors. Pacific oystor prices continue un usually low with further shading horo and there. With retailers selling at 25c pint, tho lowest prlco in lustory la shown. KMjmi nf wlinliuuiln trndlnor: Walla Walla spinach Is better qual ity and Is selling mostly $1.1S$1.25 box. Hothouso cucumbers are now ap pearing from California. Bales con tinue mostly $2.25$2.50 dozen. Head lettuce prices aro again be ing generally shaded. Receipts In creasing. Artichoke markot Is weaker but only fractional. ' Cauliflower market Is steady with a general $1.25 top. Citrus fruit prices generally un changed. Sugar' Is weak at the late cut of a nickel. Cattle' Continues Downward Trend CORVALLIS, Ore., Jan. 22 VP) Cattle prices continued their down wardtrend, declining about 50 cents during the past week at both Port land and Chicago, said a summary is sued today by tho Oregon State col lege extension service in co-operation with tho U. 8. D. A. bureau of agri cultural economics. The number of cattle slaughtered under federal meat inspection In 1931 was slightly greater than tho number In 1930, today's review said. Slaughter of sheep and hogs showed a consld orablo Increase. ' Following are the 1931 slaughterings as listed in the review: cattle, 8,107, 842; calves 4,716,560; Bheep 18,070,- 875; hogs, 44,771,981. : . Sharp Setback In Wall Street Today NEW YORK, Jon. 22 (Pi The stock market experienced Its sharpest set back slnco tho January rally got un der way today. Trading was moderate until tho last hour, with a turnover of only about 1,600,000 shares for the day, but losses of 2 to 4 points were numerous In prominent Issues, Stocks Losing 3 to 4 points Included such Issues as V. S. Steel, American Can, DuPont, Allied Chemical. Case, American Telephone, Eastman, Santa Fo and Norfolk and Western. BOSTON, Jan. 22 lT) Tho Com mercial Bulletin will say tomorrow: "Tnere has been a fairly good movement In wool again this week, although hardly so extensive as a week ago. The call Is chiefly for fine and half blood combing and woolen, wools, the lower of these grades being very firm. 1 . "The foreign markets keep along at a 'fairly steady pace and prices have varied but little during the wceic. There is a fairly good clearance re ported at London at steady rates. In the west there has been com paratively little happening. A little business on winter loans is reported and it Is figured that possibly 26, 000,000 pounds of wool has been tied up on three loans thus far to date. The manufacturing , position is promising fairly good business dur ing the next few weeks at least. Pine wooled goods, whether wor sted or woolen appear to have tho chief call. While prices on wool are steady, they are a bit dearer again this week. 'Mohair continues rather slow of sale and quotably without material change." The Bulletin also will publish the following quotations: Scoured basis: Oregon Fine and f. m. staple 54-66. Fine and f. m. Fr. combing 60-63; fine and f. m. cloth ing 46-47. Volley No. 1, 48-50.
