Chapter 29 MENDED ROMANCE "VfOU remember," said Jimmie 1 as Nancy, Donald and tbe su perintendent followed bleu eagerly," taat Duckworth bad told us ot see ing a woman pas3 outside the house on the Dlgbt Miss Querdllng was killed. 1 got tbe woman, Mrs. Frater, to go that way again. To seu ber was possible, but It was necessary to be close to tbe window, very close indeed. You found that, Richmond. You bad lo press your face against tbe glass. But it did not suggest anything to you. Duck worth explained that be drew ibe curtains for tbe sake or privacy, but wby did be oeer so carefully up and down the garden? Was It not to see bat it was sale for blm to slip out?" "1'robably It was," said Klcb nioiid, "but few .yould have I thought ol If. 1 did suspect him for a mo ment when he mentioned tho wo nan. I thought no might have Im agined her. But it proved lo be true." "Exactly. Then the slngiug all tut time. Did that suggest noth ing? Tbe lovers were alone to gother, yet there were no affection ate Interludes, ooly continuous sing Hit in that powerful voice audible in the adjoining rooms. Hardly natural, was 117 Yet II was cou slsleut with a desire to make peo ple think there wa no interval or break." "Why did you hestltate?" asked Dcnald. "It is not easy to believe that a pleasant-mannered girl can be at heart capable of dellherato aod cun ning . murder. Had it been Duck worth alone, there might have been no reason for hesitation. Out Evelyn was implicated as deeply as her lover. "Every one seemed to realize tbe matter of motive so far as Mar Jorio was concerned, but, as i pointed out to you tno or three times. It was identically the stuie wilb Evelyn. "Welt, we reached rather a dead lock until the night fjreeu was fouud dying with his supposed coo iossIou by bis side. Then things fioomcd to happen all at once. J came across Stirling and Marlorle lore-making, and was compelled to change my route. Audrey dlscor ered that it was Stirling's car we bad been worrying about, and J noticed something that to me was more slgutjcaut tbau any of these thlugs. it was while we were play ing bridge that the confession must have been put by Green's side D ick worth was in the adjoining otn singing, and at Ibe appropri ate moment we were favored wilb the same two sougs "To tbe Desert' and September Hoses. I might have burst Into the room then, but 1 nad no reason to sua pect more deviltry. To be quite honest, it was not until Green was found aod I was In the garage with Netherton that Its slgntlcancc dawned on me. When 1 got back lo the bouse, Duckworth bad already gone. No doubt tbe graphopbone went with blm. So 1 bad to wait." The superintendent seemed fasci nated as bo looked at ibe phono graph uoeJIo. "I wonder bow they Kit that queer dope used on Green?" he asked. "Seeds ot Paradise!" said Jimmie. "Duckworth was or.ee employed In a brewery and this poison is used as an adultorant in beer. I think Evelyn reallied my knowledge of this poison might lead police k the person wbo used iu" "How did you know they were married?" Inquired Nancy. "That takes us back to the time when ther called on me nhiut thne lutters. Had they determined .hen what -they meant lo l.i? They probably thought tbat by calling in the police antf seeing an alleged ex pert outside they wonld divert sus picion from themselves. It was the' same cunning that caused Duck worth to point out that probably not all the letters were written by the same hand, as be figured ttat I should probably detect the varia tions anyway." "But tha marriage," put In Nancy. "Be patient. When they called on me and tbey referred to my pow ers ot deduction, I said tbat from Duckworth's attire 1 might deduce It was bis birthday. Exchanging an odd look, they said It was. Seeing tbat look, I wasn't su sure, aud later It occurred to me tbat fellows wear new clothes 'on other occasions than on birthdays. What about a wedding day? So I Inquired and learned tbat Lionel Daiton and Evelyn Blake bad married on tbe very day they called on me." Nancy was still curious. "Wat the will really lost, or did Evelyn and Lionel bide It and then put It back" "That Annabelle Querllng woulu have put such an intimate document Into tbe well ot a work basket If unlikely. My Idea Is tbat Evelyn knew of tbe will and decided to se Crete It, realizing that Its provisions barring marriage would point to Duckworth and herself. What they could not foresee was that tho search for it would take place during iheir absence at the InquesL It wa? difficult to replace. It afterwards Uuu when their plot against Ureen seemed likely to succeed, tbey die covered a place where the will could plausibly be found in spite ol the previous search. So tbat eoden another possible ground of sus plclon." After more discussion. Anally the superintendent rose to go, extendlnp his hand lo Jimmie. "1 cannot say sir. how much 1 owe to you. but for your belp It might hava taken me a precious long time lo puzzle It out." At last the time came for Jimmie to say good-bye. "1 seem to hear London's peace and Innocence -calling me. These country places are too exciting, but there Is one call I want to pay before I go. It Is Mrs. Nethcrton." So, a clasp of tbe band for Don aid. a kiss for his pretty wife, and tho homeward way began. Jimmie was wondering hew things would go with Bill and Audrey. That their engagement would be renewed there was little doubt, and, of course, sometime In tbe future tbey would marry. When be reached Corner Cottage Mrs. Netherton was standing In her garden. She smiled at him. "Ab, Mr. Haswell," she said. When two young people are in love and don't know It what should - 3U do about It? BUI and Audrey have been pals so long tbat tbey seemed to get to the brotber-and-sisterly stage. Then this trouble came and they did not meet often. Audrey came to Jie. and I could see si. e was Just miserable wilbout Bill As to Bill tha sore-headed bear was by comparison a docile pet what should be done?" Jimmte's eyes twinkled. It was Indeed a comedy tbat tbe young people should dissemble their love for ber sake, while she, discerning It at the preciso moment when It was officially In abeyance, should be worrying as to bow she was to bring tbem together. "You say Audrey called? Did yoo hi ' at anything?" "No. I left ber in my room a half hour ago and told Bill there was some one tor him. I did not say wbo It was. but I pushed blm In and locked tbe door. I am wonder Ing what I ought to do next." As she spoke. Bill and Audrey suddenly appeared, arm-in-arm. rour.c tha corner ot the bouse .'on forgot the window," be told bis mother. "My dear Bill." she retorted. "It took you a bait hour to remember It." "Looks as though I'm In tbe way." Jimmie was grinning. "1 have on y one ambition left to kiss the bride now. In case I am not asked to the wedding " "You shall be!" said Audrey But if tllll doesn't mind " THE END (t.XMili, Hit, I. a. littisiett Ct) Health Talks THE THYHOID More is probably known about the structure, function, diseases and treatment of the thyroid gland than of any other of the so-called en docrlnes or glands of Internal secre tion. The thyroid Is located near the wind-pipe and a little below and be hind the Adam's apple, and Is formed of two pear-fihaped lobes. Close to It. but ot different functions, are sim ilar glands of internal secretion, the parathyroids. The thyroid througn its secretion cf secretions, regulates the metabolic I 1 ate of the body. It controls tne , ..burning up of body fuels, McCarrlson declares that "the thy. d to h human boay what the l Jzt , T draft Is to the fire." The thyroid stimulates growth In rb'irS: tion by the bed? of protein sub stances. It influences. In some way not yet determined, sexual function. The thyroid secretes a substance known as throxin. of which Iodine Is an Important element. It is inter esting and significant that throxin lr found in the milk of nursing moth ers, the infant obtaining its chief supply of Iodine in this way. Since the secretions of the thyroid influence growth, this is another point in favor or tbe breast-feeding of infants. The influence of the thyroid on growth has been, shown by Jacques Loeb, who demonstrated that by the destruction of the thyroid in tad poles they could be kept from chang ing into a frog. The tadpoles could grow to unusual size and lot relatively long periods, but they lacked . the capacity to change into the adult frog stage. On the other hand, if very young tadpoles were fed with thyroid gland, the change Into frogs could be has tened, some reaching the adult stage when no larger than a fly. SIMPLE GOITER Simple goiter is a disease In which the enlargement of the thyroid gland Is the outstanding sign. Ordinarily simple goiter does not produce any marked disturbances In the body, such, for example, as are associated with the under or over secretion of the thyroid. It is, however, disfiguring and may. because of its Increased bulk, press upon the windpipe, blood vessels and nerves In the neck. In addition, goiter Is liable to induce emotional and mental disturbances. Simple goiter is more prevalent among females than among males, the thyroid gland being somehow as sociated with the functlors of the female reproductive system. While occasion ally a case may devetop In so-called non-goiter regions, the disease Is prevalent- In places where there Is a deficiency of. Iodine In the water and soil. . Numerous investigations here and abroad have definitely established the relation of Iodine to the normal function of the thyroid. By intro ducing verv minute Quantities of iodine into the diet or growing cmi- dren. and of golterous individuals. It is possible to reduce very markedly the prevalence oi goiter. Such a demonstration was carried through in 1917 by Mrs. Marine and Kimball in Akron, Ohio. Other and similar demonstrations were made in Vienna, in Rochester, and In many other points throughout the world. The same principle of goiter pre vention has been applied In. the ani mal industries, for goiter may develop in many animals. Including sheep and M-'ne . found goiter .existing 'even swine, mules, horses ana ooks. lc. among nroojc iroui. in ima jmn.ucnco. It requires but little iodine to keep the thyroid gland well supplied with this essential chemical substance. An excess of iodine may cause some damage. Hence, persons af flicted with goiter, and all children in goiter regions should take iodine only upon competent amice under skilled supervision. and EMANTEL RE-ENTERS RING; TO MANAGE OWN CAMPAIGN SAN FRANCISCO Armand Emanuel, barrister-boxer who dropped the pursuit of law to enter the ring and gravitated back to legal prac tice after a clip on the jaw by Mickey Walker has announced his intention to try to come back as a fighter, Emanuel formerly fought as a light heavyweight but now weighs around 200 pounds and will train In the upper division.
