More is probably known about the
structure, function, diseases and
treatment of the thyroid gland than
of any other of the so-called en
docrlnes or glands of Internal secre
tion. The thyroid Is located near the
wind-pipe and a little below and be
hind the Adam's apple, and Is formed
of two pear-fihaped lobes. Close to
It. but ot different functions, are sim
ilar glands of internal secretion, the
parathyroids.

The thyroid stimulates growth In

stances. It influences. In some way
not yet determined, sexual function.
The thyroid secretes a substance
known as throxin. of which Iodine
Is an Important element. It is inter
esting and significant that throxin
lr found in the milk of nursing moth
ers, the infant obtaining its chief
supply of Iodine in this way.
Since the secretions of the thyroid
influence growth, this is another
point in favor or tbe breast-feeding
of infants.
The influence of the thyroid on
growth has been, shown by Jacques
Loeb, who demonstrated that by the
destruction of the thyroid in tad
poles they could be kept from chang
ing into a frog.
The tadpoles could grow to unusual
size and lot relatively long periods,
but they lacked . the capacity to
change into the adult frog stage.
On the other hand, if very young
tadpoles were fed with thyroid gland,
the change Into frogs could be has
tened, some reaching the adult stage
when no larger than a fly.
SIMPLE GOITER
Simple goiter is a disease In which
the enlargement of the thyroid gland
Is the outstanding sign.
Ordinarily simple goiter does not
produce any marked disturbances In
the body, such, for example, as are
associated with the under or over
secretion of the thyroid.
It is, however, disfiguring and may.
because of its Increased bulk, press
upon the windpipe, blood vessels and
nerves In the neck. In addition,
goiter Is liable to induce emotional
and mental disturbances.
Simple goiter is more prevalent
among females than among males,
the thyroid gland being somehow as
sociated with the functlors of the
female reproductive system.

Numerous investigations here and
abroad have definitely established
the relation of Iodine to the normal
function of the thyroid. By intro
ducing verv minute Quantities of
iodine into the diet or growing cmi-
dren. and of golterous individuals. It
is possible to reduce very markedly
the prevalence oi goiter.
Such a demonstration was carried
through in 1917 by Mrs. Marine and
Kimball in Akron, Ohio. Other and
similar demonstrations were made in
Vienna, in Rochester, and In many
other points throughout the world.
The same principle of goiter pre
vention has been applied In. the ani
mal industries, for goiter may develop
in many animals. Including sheep and
M-'ne . found goiter .existing 'even
swine, mules, horses ana ooks. lc.

It requires but little iodine to keep
the thyroid gland well supplied with
this essential chemical substance.
An excess of iodine may cause
some damage. Hence, persons af
flicted with goiter, and all children
in goiter regions should take iodine
only upon competent amice
under skilled supervision.
