A re-your-iemngsters Health Talks INFANTILE PARALYSIS SERUM Research laboratory- reports lndl cate that we shall soon have avail able an anti-poliomyelitis . serum (ft sorum for Infantile paralysis) with which we may be able to stop the ravages of this disease. Our use of serum (the liquid part of blood) in the treatment of lnfan tile paralyslB has so far been limited to that -taken from former victims of the disease. The basis for the use of this serum Is in the belief that persons recover ing from poliomyelitis have In their blood substances which can. counter act the disease in others. Because, however, this serum has not proved very powerful, and be cause of the difficulty in securing it, efforts have been made .to develop the serum in animals. Horses have been used in these ex periments and recent reports Indi cate ,the possibility of the produc tion of an effective anti-poliomye-litis horse serum. This is produced by injecting brain and spinal cord substances, known to contain the viruses of Infantile paralysis, Into a horse. It ha3 been found that, after a period of time, the horse's blood con tains Immunizing substances. This, according to the reports, has been es tablished through experiments upon monkeys. Monkeys aro susceptible to infan tile paralysis. A number were In jected with the virus of poliomye litis. Then some of them were then treated with the anti-polio serum derived from tho treated horse. Those given the scrum survived without Injury, while, the untreated ones died. More specifically, Dr.' Eijkman, professor of hygiene In the Univer sity of Utrecht, discovered the cause of a diBease known as berl-beri, com mon in the Far East. ' The story of his' diseov'tffy : Is In teresting. In 1800 Dr. Eijkman was' stationed In a settlement In Java, He noticed that the fowls fed on cooked rice which was left over from the diet fed to the patients in "the hospital to which he was attached developed a peculiar disease. The symptoms of the disease af fecting the fowls were similar to those of beri-beri in humans. This led him to conclude that bcrl-berl was the result of defective diet. By a series of experiments on birds he conclusively demonstrated that disease could always be brought on by an exclusive diet of polished rice. Ho further demonstrated that tho disease In birds, and beri-beri in man could be cured as well as pre vented by a diet of whole rice or by adding to the diet the milling wastes of pollshsed rice. , Dr. Eljkman's work was, therefor, in a sense a pioneer study In that vastly Important and still but par tially understood realm of vitamins. Subsequent to Dr. Eljkman's dis covery, others continued tho work and developed our knowledge of the so-called deficiency diseases, tholr cure, and prevention. Beri-beri is but on of a group of diseases caused by vitamin deficiency. Today we know of a number of such diseases, Including beri-beri, scurvy, rickets and pellagra. We have also definitely established the exist&nce of at least six vitamins. WHERE TO SHOOT Just how this royal salute can be arranged Is what worries the state department. He is Charles McNary .of Oregon, assistant to Jim Watson of Indiana, the Republican floor leader of the senate. Those wishing to get the "Inside" on questions of importance in the senate long have been in the habit or talking it over with McNary. All know that he keeps his cars about as close to the ground as any of nib colleagues; that very little goes on around the capltol with which he is not laminar. Since last December, It has be come apparent that Watson has turn ed over much of the leadership work to him. He has handled the details for the big Hooaier leader more and more as the days passed. There are some who will tell you that it was McNary who finally brought peace in the drought relief controversy. Suave, But Firm His temperament is the sort re quired for one in such a position. The senators like him and respect his ability. His voice is soft, though when he desires his words can hit home with telling effect. But at such times he leaves no hard feeling! In their wake. He keeps his temper If at times he seems to be a little Impatient. And senators, regardless of which side of the chamber, feel that they can count on McNary to be fair and reasonable. A Stanford university man and a close personal friend of President Hoover, he nevertheless is regarded as independent in his actions. Those who know him best say that he will listen, but no one can force him into anything. They say also that he will make concessions to get the best ob tainable legislation, but that he will never surrender a principle to do so.
