Thursday, May 8, 1930 LA GRANDE EVENING OBSERVER, LA GRANDE, OREGON Page Seven STRESSES MORAL , VALUE OF MUSIC Seen by C. W. Collins as. Solution of Many Dis- ciplinary Problems. j Musical training in tho. public 1 schools Is otio of tho most effective ways of teaching moral discipline to the young, In the opinion of C W- Collins, director of a national school of music in Chicago. . The very nature of music, says Mr. Coi- Hns, not only lends (o bring .out the most worthwhile traits of character. Improve the scholarship Of -the children, but 1 also of a rery practical value to them after graduation. 'Character building Is the funda mental note In - education today." says Mr. QolUns. '"The .ultimate test by which the school system of which we are so proud must stand or fall Is Its ability to form char acter, to send out youngsters ready to take their place, in the world as high-minded responsible clti- zens. The new conception of odu catlon can be felt In practically every subject in tho grade. school curriculum. Mathematics makes for straightforward, honest thinking. There can be no fudging or sliding over In sums which can be checked and proved back. History teaches the lesson of -moral valuoi tho-ultl-. mato downfall of tho unmoral man And so It la wtth tho rest of thb school subjects. They can all be made, and we arc trying to make them, lessons in right thinking and high moral standards.' Serving tho same purpose of moral training and character build ing, nnd often In greater degree, are the so-called extra-curricular subjects. yaccording to Mr. Collins. Thes0 generally have a sugar coat ing that the required studies lack and are, therefore, eagerly wel comed by the children. Music, art, athletics, i manual training and do mestic scienco all have valuable lessons to teach and on these grounds alone justify the time nnd expense" they Involve, he declares. "Take music for example,' says Mr. Collins. "Music has been found the solution of .many disciplinary problems. It teaches the children the lessons of co-operation, de velops a sense of pride and self respect, and cultivates a taste for beauty and the worthwhile things; In life. It calls for inflniie patience and perseverance, quick thinking, accuracy and similar worthwhile character traits. Tho grammar school that Is fortunuto enough to hav its own band and orchestra is doubly blest as It will get and hold the children's Interest more than any other activity, It will keep tho children gff tho street, adds to their pride in I hei r own school and makes a real contribu tion to the community. Tho day is past when educatora nnd parents look on music as a frill to educa tion, a side issue.. It is being rec ognized now for Its true worth, and tho music organizations in schools urn multiplying by leaps and bounds." Menus Of The Day Hundreds of Thousands In U. S. A. Floors, furni ture and woodwork arc singularly free from dust. It's all in the way this furnace is built. For just as the truck tank is made gasoline light by hol-riveting and cold-calking ... so the Torrid Zone is made gas, smoke and dust-tight. And the air in a Torrid Zone equipped home is bound to be clean and healthful . . . for several reasons. First, the air is never tainted with cqnl-gns. Second, the air is moistfully healthful because a Torrid Zone humidifier lias twice the evaporating area of ordinary water pans rhjht inside the casing and, furthermore, is positioned for most rapid evaporation. Third, proper air circulation is guaranteed when a Lennox Furnace man installs according to the Standard Code. A I.cnnox Torrid Zone equipped home is a safe and healthy borne for every member of the family.' And what's more, the Torrid Zone is eco nomical. It is designed to heat with from 10 to '20 less fuel than ordinary furnaces. What ever your fuel . . . bard coal, soft coal, coke, liguitoj wood, gas, oil ... it is sure to go farther witll a Torrid Zone!
