JUDGES AND POLITICS
No doubt most of the judges in that great city which" has
witnessed recent judicial scandals are men of high character
and outstanding ability. The few who are not only unfit for
the bench but are men of exceedingly low associations give
the whole system a bad name. One corrupt jurist can do
more to impair public confidence in the couits than a.hundied
honest and capable judges can do to restore that confidence.
"The business of being a judge is a highly skilled profes
sion," says an eminent barrister. "It is no job for novices or
bunglers. It is beset with opportunities for mistake and
mischief. It needs exceptional qualifications of tempera
ment, experience and knowledge of the law. Only men who
have demonstrated that they possess these qualifications
should le selected."
