For months it was rumored that Andrew Mellon was going to resign as secretary of tho treasury. There were ..' those who said that the earlier stock market uneasiness was due to these rumors. If Mellon left the cabinet, it was said, . anything might happen. Fall now stands under sentence of a year in pri son and a fine of $100,000; and tho long, tiresome drama .-of the oil scandals enters its final act. A GROWTH OF OVKR 50 ," ; Reporting a survey of i)8 Oregon cities made by Dr. Gilbert jof the University of Oregon, the Oregon Voter recently used the resulting index and tho school enrollment index to show the probable growth of' various cities in the state since the 1920 census. Those communities that have more than doubled in population are Klamath Falls, liend, Toledo and Mibvaukie. Those that have increased r0y or more are La Grande, Med ford, St. Helens, Cottage Grove, Eugene, Gresham, Tillamook, Myrtle Point. Those listed as increas ing 30 or more include Grants Pass, Corvallis, Salem, Portland, Arlington, Milton. A gain of l.r is estimated for Pendleton, Tho Dalles, Oregon City, Marshfield, Ontario. All of which is especially interesting to every community in the state. Those that have gone forward in the last nine years gain prestige. The outsider looks upon that gain as indicative of the future, of progressive spirit, of sound en terprise. Tho community that does not show a growth is relegated to the background as stagnant in spirit and energy and resources. According to the 1020 census La Grande had ft population of a few less than 7000. A gain of 50 would mean .liiOO population added in nine years probably a very lonscisnuve estimate but not accurate when considering the present restricted boundary lines. School enrollment indi cates this growth but the school district boundaries and the municipal boundaries are not identical. The school district is larger and includes the territory outside the city limits where much of the growth has taken place. It is estimated that twelve to fifteen hundred people reside in this area outside. It is also estimated that the population within the present limit will be approximately fir.OO probably five hundred short of the total necessary to place La Grande officially in tho ten thousand class. The boundary extension would add what is needed. Jumping from 6900 to over 10 000 would attract the attention of La Grande throughout the Northwest that it deserves. It would attract continued growth, additional payrolls, new outlets for Union county products, greater prosperity. PROPERTY ASSESSED !"
