Diphtheria epidemics that often cost the lives of school
children are started through just .such cases as the one re
ported to the city health officer yesterday. A child became
rick on Wednesday but spent half of tho day in school. Knur
children in the same family continued in school the rest of
the week. A physician was not called until Sunday, only to
find a very severe case of diphtheria. Members of the family
were immediately given anti-toxin and the home tiiaranlinod
but it is impossible to determine how the disease may have
been carried dining the previous four or five days. Dozens
of school children have been exposed. Those who have been
immunized with diphtheria innoculations are safe. Their
parents need not worry. The others are in constant danger.
Why will people take such chances with the lives and health
of their children when three harmless, inexpensive injections
of serum will j;ive complete protection? Any physician will
give the innoculations. If necessary, the city will pay the
expense of the scrum. The time to act is now. The diph
theria, season is on. There will probably be cases in li

unknown. In New Voik state, where immunization of school

its appearance.
