Nice, on the Mediterranean was it delightful part of their trip and while there they saw hull fights in which six bills were killed and in which matadors and picadors, in their gorgeous costumes, escaped injury. Then had a visit at Monte Carlo altio. Venice, Milan and Lucerne are included in their Immediate itiner ary and they wrote from Florence. They will return here September 2N. Eva Carbine Will Wed L. Garrett, convicted and sentenced j to life imprisonment for a brutal slaying In the rugged Nebraska sandhills region. Through u queer twist In a 25-year-old dEvorco law his sentence has been lifted by a one-day mar gin and he has a good chance to win freedom. Garrett's estranged and presum ably divorced wife convicted him with her testimony. She was the only witness of the killing of Wil liam Kinsley, the ranchman for whom she was acting as house keeper. ' The packed courtroom was tense as shn took the witness stand nun told her dramatic story, accusing Garrett. She told how Kinsley was shot down as he passed tht living room window at' the ranch the roar ot tho gun his fall. Then she ran t(. the window, peeretl out, and saw j a figure crouching in tho gloom, smoking gun in hand. The, figure I was Garrett, she testified. I Levelling the gun at her he took j her many miles Into the country before releasing her, she said. Garrett denied that story, de nied the slaying, and as the trial progressed produced an alibi to. show he was manv mile from the scene of the slaying. Hut the Jury believed the woman. Just as he hud grown accustom ed to his prison life, after two years, the (supreme -court sustained his appeal and sent the case back. Nebraska laws requiro that a wife must wait sis months after asking n divorce before, tho writ can be granted, tt was designed to promote reconciliation. Mrs. Gar rett's writ had been obtained one day before tho six months expired and nt the time of the slaying and the trial she was still his wife, and therefore could not testify against him. Now it Ih the state's turn to seek loopholes and technicalities In tho law. In the meantime. Garrett Is held In prison, awaiting retrial.
