Newlln Hook Store1 1:1. 7-S-tfl PAYING FOR OPERA Grand opera is suiiposed to be necessarily a losing ven ture. The Chicago Grand Opera company piles up pretty reguiariy a deficit or about hair a milium dollars a year. The Metropolitan Grand Opera company of Now York, most fam ous organization of its kind in the world, probably loses more than that if every expense is considered. Rich patrons are depended on to make up the loss. There may be a turn in the situation, though, in spile of mounting costs of production. "The Metropolitan company, in a week of opera given in Cleveland recently, had all its ex penses paid. Moreover, the Northern Ohio Opera associa tion, in charge of tho musical festival, emerged with a cash profit of $11,000. That will be added to $10,000 profit left from a similar week last year. The people of northern Ohio made this possible by paying for eight operatic porformances $173,000 last year, and $187,000 this year. First-class opera companies should be able, with the grow ing American interest in good music, to tap similar resources In the same way in many parts of the country every season. Not only Cleveland but Atlanta, San Francisco and various nther large communities have proved their willingness to do their part toward supporting fine American musical produc tions, and there are almost countless small communities eager to eo-epeinte with them. Until interest grows enough, how ever, we hope such companies as the Chicago Opera' com pany will continue annual tours of education with their own liackers handling the deficit each time. Try Theji?
