Because everyone in attendance had to travel over 60 or
more miles of Oregon roods, the question of future high
way extensions and finance was a frequent topic of convema
tion at' the Crater Lake meeting of the State Editorial As
sociation last week. Once it crept into the formal discussion
of the convention and it is safe to predict that any move to
reduce license fees and cut highway revenue finds pructic-

Not because editors control public opinion in Oregon but be
cause they know public opinion know how different brands
of logic are likely to appeal to thinking voters and usually
take their one accordingly, '. .

Althaugh-opposed to the 0 license idea or anything akin
to it, not everyone at the Outer Lake session Was convinced
that the dangerous bills would be beaten in November. Sure
ly a victory for the decreased revenue and smaller fee could
be blamed squarely on the newspapers of the state. Only a
poor presentation of the facts and arguments on both sides
could make that possible. It's difficult to see how any support
could be won the offending bills with a good premutation.
Speaking briefly Iwfore the convention oil the effect of any
reduction in auto license fees, C. C. Chapman, editor of the
Oregon Voter and most noted tax export of the Northwest,
said that the Dunne bills, now on file at Salem, would bare
ly permit payment of interest and principal of present state
highway bonds, with no funds available for maintenance or
new construction. Not a happy prospect for Oregon motor
ists! And in his usual commanding and convincing manner,
Mr. Chapman pointed out how such a result wuutd jeopardize
the only outstanding achievement now to tile credit of the
atate, Oregon highways a road system' envied throughout
the nation, ' . , ;
That's a point worthy of much consideration. No one
thing, accomplished by the people of the state, is so vital, so
important in the state's welfare and general prosperity as the
present highway system.. Maintenance and gradual exten
sion is an absolute necessity. We cannot lielieve that voters
of Oregon will do anything to make a continuation of the pres
ent program and policy impossible.
