Lunch by the roadside interesting views along the STUDENT AUTOS , Should a college utudent be allowed to have a car? The controversy, on which various stands are Iwing taken by different institutions, is raging more than ever. The state universities of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsisn have de cided that the automobile cannot be banished from college because it is a necessary means of conveyance. They seem to think it is no more harmful to student life than it is to business life. Meanwhile two Indiana institutions, I'urdue and the iitalc university, have forbidden student use of motor cars just as some eastern colleges have done. And now the University of Illinois follows their example with a stiongei 'arraignment of the college automobile than has yet ap ipeared. Student ownership of autos, the authorities say, has a direct relationship to their school standing. The 'Student motorists ale the poorest students and the more use they make of their cars, the poorer students they be come. The colleges say it is a question of cars or educa tion. ' More paiticularly, they say, the posesssion of a car tends to result in a constant and serious waste of stiulmil'sl time; it leads to numerous accidents; it encourages viola lions of the traffic laws by the students; and it seriously congests traffic near the campus. Many of these objec tions me convincing and a visit to our own state institu tions indicates that the student auto presents a real prob lem. ' Not all of the blame (if such there is) can bo laid at the door of over-indulgent parents. Many college students own motor vehicles, cither individually or in partnership, with out the knowledge of parents. The used car market which has put aged flivvers within the reach of anyone who can scare up thiity-fivc to fifty dollars in cash has made it possible for almost any student to jump into the car own ing class. At many colleges four or five students, gills as! well as boys, for a car-owning partnership, put six or seven ' dolars into the common fundand the purchase is made.! Parents would have difficulty denying such a small expendi-' lure even if they all knew about it. Kegardless of t,e condition of the many wrecks that Jire thus student property, the problem remains the same.! JWost young people naturally picfer to play rather than work and the more nppoitmiily afforded them, the mora Unattractive the work apcars. Colleges are for educational purposes. They have a perfect right to banish student cais iT it hinders (hat puipo.se. And with cai-s prohibited there1 1'ie still many ways for students to enjoy life.
