Isrrjwnhr Canvras i up Fulditi Ilrownxc St up Red Cross Drug Store DISGUISED AS "AUYKRTISIM;." Every community suffers at frequent intenals from 'graft advertising." La Grande is now in the throes of a new publicity scheme apparently designed to boost the cause of an organization liencfit, but actually conceived so that the outside genius who promotes it cam depart from the city with fifty or a hundred extra dollars earned for him by some unsuspecting mcmliers of -the organization that hired him. As usual, the business men are the goats. The last thing they want is a two-by-four ad in some program or freak publicity folder. Hut many of them are afraid to pay "no" and make it t-tick. They don't know that the organization in whose name it is solicited is probably as ' disapproving of the scheme as they are, but that it is tied down by a contract read and analyzed after it was signed. They know that it is purely a matter of charity when they spend nvhney fur this advertising" they have sought re-(iult-getting methods too long and have thrown away haid eamed dollars too many times nut to know that they are the suckers in the deal. The Olrsei-vcr is ph.mi to advertising schemes of this nature liecause it hurts the institution of advertising and takes legitimate money i,ut of the community in an ille gitimate way. Th- Observer never solicits advertising for a community l:nefit or organization entertainment, scek ilig rather to give all wm thy enteipi isos of that character i'detiuate publicity in the nns columns so that the eepse Items will be as sn.ail as xtss.b!e and the net returns as great. It is a yi!icy followed Ucaiie we wish to cooperate with worthy organization effort and Uiause we wih to i protect the busiiics mui who ale constantly called on to! contribute, not lcau.e they are moie generally benefited, but because they aie nmre aco s.ible and more generous. When such publieity is available to an organization without cost it is a particular s. unc i f regiet that business inter ests should still le inijv.cd uj n with this obvious "graft advertising."
