Every community suffers at frequent intenals from
'graft advertising." La Grande is now in the throes of a
new publicity scheme apparently designed to boost the
cause of an organization liencfit, but actually conceived
so that the outside genius who promotes it cam depart from
the city with fifty or a hundred extra dollars earned for
him by some unsuspecting mcmliers of -the organization
that hired him.
As usual, the business men are the goats. The last
thing they want is a two-by-four ad in some program or
freak publicity folder. Hut many of them are afraid to
pay "no" and make it t-tick. They don't know that the
organization in whose name it is solicited is probably as '
disapproving of the scheme as they are, but that it is tied
down by a contract read and analyzed after it was signed.
They know that it is purely a matter of charity when they
spend nvhney fur this advertising" they have sought re-(iult-getting
methods too long and have thrown away haid
eamed dollars too many times nut to know that they are
the suckers in the deal.
