(Jen. 13: :'J. ; The man who formerly published socrl caliilofjues seems to be' editing luurifat magazines now. i People Weieat, overwork, nnd overtax their bodies nnd mental energies, a doctor says. Overwork is probably the least excessive. - I A home economics instructor announces that dusting in the house is a peril to health. Husbands who could never sec the necessity are vindicated, though probably on radic ally different grounds. . ..' Among one or two other difficulties, the newspaper publisher has to deal with subscribeis who expect immed iate and complete printing of an article which would occupy fifteen columns of space. Unfortunately the only way they can be treated is with an expression of regret. MODKRATION IS 'ADVISED. ' Dr. , Adolf Lorcnz, the noted . "bloodless" surgeon of Vienna, who has just arrived in America, is cadited with Vaying that the way to reach old age is to indulge in all jVices moderately. It one is to assume that ho means vice In gej.litualwiild haviuuddud, a ..further injunction- accept advice in moderation also. We are charitable enough .to believe, however, that the famous surgeon has been mis quoted or that a wrong construction has been put upon his words, for it is a strain upon intelligence to think that such advice should be taken literally, no matter who utters it. Some Words nlw.ys are to be interpreted with the aid of the proverbial grain of wilt and the .statement attributed to Dr. Iorcnz seems to fall into that category. t We assume that the thing the celebrated Austrian wished to impress on all was the necessity of moderation i our indulgences such as tobacco, beverages, rich foods find the like. Anybody is privileged to interpret his state ment to hia own satisfaction but his alleged advice is un necessary to those who would lie inclined lo lake him at his word and therein find justification for unwarrantable folly. Others will censure him for even countenancing anything that savors of vice. , Those for whom the statement really is meant will do well to remember that he probably desired to stress the moderation feature of his approval of some coin moil habits. . ,' SITU TO INVENTION. As industrial activity always causes a great stir among inventors, the fact that the V.rZ't rush at the I'nited SUtes patent office was previously unequalled gives one a fair idea of the height to which the industrial barometer scaled 'ast year. I'atent rights were issued last year on K'v'ilo inventions in this country, or twice as many as were granted in l'.Nin, and more than in all oilier countries comliined. Congress enacted the first patent law in 17'.)0, Imt the present and moiv comprehensive law dates from Ki. In the 13" years which have elapsed since patent No. 1 was issued 1,500,0011 inventions have been patented in this coun try. That total is twice that of ileal Hiitaiu and four times (hat of (lennany. Perhaps the reason for the htrger number of patents here is a greater need for new inventions. Although fic tion pictures the inventor us an impractical dreamer toy ing with the unheard-of. the vast majority of all American inventions are the fuUillnicnt of the needs of industry, commerce and society. As the world's givatest industrial country, with the world's largest railroad system and jrivitt est number of automobiles, and as the country in which machinery has been most highly develop! and most imi veisally applied, the United St.ites ol'I'eis the most inspira tion and highest reward for invention. ; i i : , - -- By WILLIAMS j 1 .
