It deserves the careful study of all properly owners residing in the territory proposed for annexation. ; Governor Pierce is keeping many politicians on the anxious seat while ho wavers between thij executive office nt Salem and the senate chamber in Washington. Walter is no mean politician and the race he finally enters will be vprth watching at the finish. t.-.- NOT ALL vmiNK.". .... -.. ' Thrift is a much abused word. To many people it means merely being '"light," to others it means paying the lowest possible price for things purchased, and to still others it means saving money. True thrift, however, is much more than is indicated by any of those conceptions, more sensible, more appealing to ideals of good business and citizenship. As outlined in various ways this, week in La Grande and throughout the county in observance of National Thrift Week, it commends itseif to everyone! who has the best interests of. family and self at liwuC. True thrift is the intelligent handling of one's income so as to protect the joys and com foils; uf the future while enjoying those of the present. It is a matter of intelligent spending. If we spend wisely, it iS only natural that we will not spend our entire incomes, whether they are large it small, and a savings account becomes a matter of course. If we spend wisely, we will readily .appreciate the advant ages of home ownership where rent receipts become divi dend checks. If wc rfpend wisely, we realize at once the need for insurance that will care lor our dependents in case of disaster. If we spend wisely, the accumulated savings automatically becomes the means to investments that will provide an income in old age investments that will bear the scrutiny of our bankers and will meet their entire ap proval. If wo spend wisely, we na.tirally will spend accord ing to a fixed and studied plan a budget in which sav ings account, church contribution, amusements, clothing, in surance, and all the necessities of a year are given proper attention. If we .spend wisely, thrill is the natural re sult. In spile of the abuswl ch.vaetcr of the v.oid, the true elements of thrift commend themselves to every thinking person. Thrift is not all "bum," Doling the war thrift was urged for patriotic lemons, yet practice of it today is no less patriotic because to do th-t which makes for a greater America is pal riot i, m of fhe highest sort. And those countries which have the thriftiest inhabitants have always been the gicalcst. Today we urge thrift, however, not because it. is patnotic but because it is selfish. It means self preservation and should therefore be the most interesting goal of every individual.
