Tlicy have Invaded the barber shop and the smoker until there's lio plilce left for risque stories except the magazines. Who '.can remember the good old days when you could enter a barber shop without having to wait for the ton soral crew to trim up a half dozen bobbed heads? The president of the Austrian republic insists on fight ing a duel with the man who called him "an old fool." For a politician it seems to us that ho is unduly sensitive. A few minutes of Christmas Eve or Christmas Day can 'Well be spent reading, the feature article in this issue of The Observer by William Allen White on "Why Is Christ mas Marry?" iv fitting thought stimulant for the holiday. A l,.n Grande man says that he usee about ten gallons of gas ii'jiiionth for his car up hntil tits' present vacation period, but that a son is home from college and consump tion has jumped to ten gallons a day. Which isn't a very scriousj problem, after all, since he told about it with a smile on his face. ; ITS SIM2I.K IMt'KIU-'KCTION Of 'all the holidays in the secular and sacred calendar cf America, the spirit of none is so nearly perfect as that of Christmas Day. Jt would be difficult to find more than a single flaw. Of course weather, bad cigars,' a misbe haved stomach and other trifles may make the day dis appointing, but small things aside there remains the one imperfection that its spirit survives loo frequently only the single day. Ferhnps it is folly to expect such an Klysian experi ence to stand up longer t.-ian 21 hours or the holiday week at the most. Perhaps a continuous round of it would weigh' heavily. It's hard to imagine having the spirit of vhristnms in ovcr-abtinil.'.nco but it might be bad for the piritual and psychological tract. It may be too much of i good thing, but' somehow or other it seems unfortunate hat the amity and good-will which prevails among humans this diiy cannot survive the last stroke of the midnight bell. J Thjs is the day when the man with gout smiles. The dvspeptic ventures to tell jokes. Willie spills the jam with impunity. Old feuds are forgotten.'. Milady's envy of her neighbor's gown may be envy, but it is not tainted with green. April Fool on 'Christmas Day would be no day at all. The man who slips on a banana peel comes up gurgling with joy. Everyone is friendly and appreciates friendli ness. Commercialized as the day may be on its surface, it is a day that breeds tolerance in every heart, it happily recalls old friends of an almost forgotten day, and it em phasizes the joy and happiness to be found at every home and fireside. It is as near to the millenial stage as it is possible to get before that era dawns. And it is all so genuine. The hypocrite hides his hy pocrisy. Even affectation affects sincerity so bouyant and glowing is the spiiit of the day. Partisanship, crmd, na tionalism, all the cleavages which separate humanity into sects and groups' and cliques are closed ami smoothed by the cement of good will and fraternity. Surely the birth of such a movement has a significance that cannot In? dis counted and that would indicate a future time when its spirit will be in evidence in the hearts of men for some thing more than u day or a week of the Christmas season.
