OFFICE CAT 'TAt MAIN RIO Parents who find difficulty answering questions about Santa's means of locomotion when snow is Jacking will be especially thankful for the white Christmas in prospect. Christmas offers an ideal opportunity for advertising the Oregon country to eastern people by sending gifts of famous Oregon products. John Dean's fancy prunes, r? cently displayed in the Chamber of Commerce window, beautiful Grande Ronde Valley apples from the Imbler district, and numerous other suggestions are at hand. It's unfortunate that some 'Stacklnnd cherries can't be available at Christmas time to help tell the world about Union county attractions. . New dispatches telling of the critical illness of Chnr , lolte, former empress of Mexico, recall the .spectacular part in the tragic but romantic scene played by her and her husband, the unfortunate and ill-advised Maximilian. Maximilian came to n melancholy end before a firing squad iiiMexico in 1867, and the news Of her husband's death so milkl'ahccil the mind of Charlotte that she has since lived in seclusion and has been known as the "mad emp ress." ' ' As tho archduke of Austria Maximilian in 1861 was made emperor of a new empire (mainly in name) in Mexico created by his brother, Emperor Francis Joseph I, of Aus , tria, and Napoleon II, of France. Maximilian is believed j lo have been n puppet for his brother and the ambitious V unci fanciful Napoleon. Some historians believe Francis i Joseph deliberately took" this way of ridding himself of his brother and that Napoleon sacrificed him to his own'am ; bilious. For throe years the' Central American empire endured under the rule of Emperor Maximilian and the "moral sup port" of French garrisons in every Mexican town. Then (suddenly Napoleon withdrew his troops and Maximilian was delivered into the hands of his "subjects." Charlotte ' mado an impassioned appeal lo the French monarch lo save her husband and upon the refusal of her tragic prayer 'went mad. Three years of pomp and .power in the New World cost. an Austrian pr'wce his life and an Austrian .princess her. mind. Even though this royal pair courted their fate this democratic ago still (eels deeply the tragedy of their lives. Obituary I L 9 if 5: lit W. I. K.MKI.K. 71AKK.U, (ire. (Hirrlnl) W, n.
