So there is much political brewing to be done between now and spring. - - I Wallowa Sun, recently sold to Harold .Ilimistreet, has taken on ' a changed appearance and la a first-class, well edited weekly, full of community news. It is a credit jto Wallowa 'and v.'iir be' given whole hearted support, w? are sure. Over in linker the recent newspaper change in The Herald hits been of distinct benefit to that paper and the city it helps serve. The young men who have bought Jt , seem to know the how and why of newspaper making and are hard at the job. ' Publication of income tax records, which is radically opposed in some quarters, is a very embarrassing thing to some people probably, and it doesn't give an accurate knowledge of earnings of those involved when y.e are un familiar with the deductions and exemptions peculiar to each case. The only sound argument in favor of tax pub licity is that taxes are public business and the public has a right to such information as much as to any matter of record. Like court recouls, tax infouiiation results in much idle gossip that it is difficult to avoid. " 1 LA (iUANDK'S POPULATION. The estimates published Saturday in The Observer rela tive to the present population of La Grande will be inter esting to tnosc concerned with the city's natural advance ment into Eastern Oregon leadership. ' Those who have studied the figures of gain made in number of school chil dren, number of lijht and water meters, number of new homes, and number of pnstoffice patrons in the past fiv -t years are confident that the immediate La Grande com munity numbois not less than t(),00() on a conservative basis. It is a giowlh Hint 1ms been comparatively ster.Hy during those years, a growth that has gone on without complete realization by most oT our citizens. In them selves, the figures are of little importance and are valuable only to those who have some personal pride in residing and working in a "city of the 10,000 class." That this growth ! is appaiently steady and consistent and is, for the most part, healthy is gratifying to those concerned with a t'lcater La Giwidc. Thut the growth has attained this point io important in the influence such a community hi'.s toward becoming a greater industrial and distributing cen ter. Development along that line is the only way a satis factory giowlh can be maintained. Ln Grande has a sui plus of labor and - minis of vet nil ou'le's.
