This project which will cost in the neighborhood of SiHft.noo J and Is expected to be. finished by September 31. ! Two extra gungs are at present employed replacing t he !I0 pound rail with l0 pound rail for a dis tance of 2S miles between Cayuse and H inkle. The passing tracks between IMeth nnd I'malilla are being graded and ext. nded to hold trains of 1(10 cars. This work Is expected to be completed by September 30 when l he tracks will be in use. During' the past four years the maintenance of way department has accomplished, among other things, the re-ballasting of ihe main line track between La Grande and Huntington with Walker pit gravel. Walk'-r pit gravel Is a very high grade ballast from a pit 40 miles north of CtiKililla on ihe t'matll-la-Spokane line. The gravel from the La Grande to Huntington bal lasting was hauled over three mountain grades a distance of some mile..
