Mich., (Sp-eiul) FpholHtTy of attractive appear ance is desirable In any clos-d car, but unleiss the cloth com bin. vb beaut y with w ea n ng ( uu lity It Inn't apt to prove so pleasing to the car owner after all. Trimming the Interior of a car With cloth that (JellghtH the eye ia one thing, but making certain thai the fabric Is going to give good servitcts quite another mat ter. Nowhere Is this more strick Ingly Illustrated than in the way the. Ford Motor Company tests the cloth it buys for upholstering clo sed cars . No woman shopper, however sharp and shrewd. ev-r thought of going to such pains In examin ing cloth she wan about to buy as does the Ford Motor Company when it purchases upholstery materials. It always k'eps an eye out for attractive appearance and in so doing considers shades that will not easily show the dust and dirt. Of even more importance are the numerous tests devised to determine the wearing tm!itics of the materials. The Ford car usually is subjected to harder us age than any other car, and the exceptional appearance of trimming to be Keen every day In oars that have been used for years attests to the thoroughness of the company t-sts. To begin with there's the "rub bing" test, a simple, but highly effective way in which the com pany finds out the wearing qua lity of all new cloth submitted as possible material for trimming. Jn this test two seat cushions are automatical ly rubbed together. In making tin-, teat a stiindard cushion Is taken at random from slock and is placed In an elect rically controlled device against a t isluon trimmed with the cloth to b. tested. When both are in place, firmly pressed together, a H-vttch is puled and the rubbing match is on. The mechanism of the machine permits a two and a half inch s roke. and exc-pt for occasional Inspections the rubbing process continues until the cloth on one or both cushions is worn out. Standard Ford cloth usually stands up for approximately 1 i hours before it Kives way under (his ex treme treatm-nt. If the new cloth lasts as lung or longer than the standard article it is passed on to other tests that disclose the exact tensile strength, the density of Its weave, weight and distribut ion of its wool and cotton contests. As all cloth used in trimiuMik Ford closed earn has what b. known as an "up and down" wmi ve (the same numb-r of libns in the warp as there are in the woof! the tensile str-nglh both crosswise and lengthwise must be the same. To test this one-Inch Btrlps of the cloth are placed In a machine that pulls them uulil thev break. A dial inuK-mni i gisters the pressure of th i nig point, and ail cloth must. up to the high standard -t ? Iho company. When II leaves the 0Vui i Ford cloth Is VI Inches wl V int- nsive shrinking brings it in l,x r.il ill-h.. tall. I a . 1 - 1 finished article must not Hit M.L percentage of wool is reuuiret JI in order lo ascertain whether not this standard Is being u, tallied, samples of every shipm of cloth are sent to the labom. orles for chemical test. The plea are treated In a Bolutioo which dissolves the wool but it not effect the cotton. Hen Oil llif-iiif- William Hut kntt of Pendleton, i representing the firm of Brewer and Wright was in . A retarded spark causes a late bpark, a spark that dots not fla unt!! the piston has start- 1 downward on the explosion stroke. Consequently the gases have ex panded and w hen fired are In contact with a larger nr. -a of the cylinder walls. As the water sys tem is in contact with this larg er heated area, there is greab-i-and quickor heat absorption w hi' ii when continued for any length tf time, causes overheating. In a six cylinder engine, ut a speed of I'tJMM H. P.M., the dis tributor furnishes 13" sparks per second. With a retarded spai-K the temperature reaches neany J0 degrees Fahrenheit In di rect touch with a larger arae of the cylinder walls. Again the heat indicating Instrument on tin radiator cap comes to your aid. and warns you that something is generating an abnormal amo jut of heat w hich, unless quickly cor rected, will cause serious dam-uffe. Lindi-ey) As related in a preceding art tieh the test carried out by 1 he Itureail of Standards at Washing ton showed that It took an wver ac" of a little over at half a tn'ond for a driver to rhange his foot from the accelerator to th" brake. or that a cur at thirty mil- an hour traveled about twenty. two feet before the brakes were touch d. In these tests eaeh driver was expeeting th'- signal to stop. It is safe to assume, t lo-re fore, that it would take considerably longer to shift the foot from the ncrelerator to brake pedal If Ho driver was not waiting for the signal.
