John v If people are as bad as some individuals think, there mus't be a. big shortage of angels in heaven. ' j A Russian town has established a fine of fifty cents for swearing. That would be one way to cure the golf epidemic in this country. . Eight billions are annually expended by Americans on automobiling, but fortunately it is all sent into active trade channels and is constantly in circulation, partial eco nomic compensation for the share that goes for "keeping up with the Joneses." About fifty special passenger trains are scheduled to pass through La Grande over the Union Pacific system cn route to Portland from eastern points during the next six weeks. Most of the trains will be loaded with delegates to various conventions to be held in the Uose City, the .Elk's' gathering being one of the big attractions that will brim? hundreds through here. No more valuable, advertising ,could be done by the Pacific Northwest than this personal jtour that eastern people will make in this way, and Oregon should benefit directly:? Mentally this Increase iif traffic ;wili give extra employment to many railroad men who lliavc suffered from slack railroad business the last few jnionths. ' : : : MINORITY OPINIONS. The .Scopes case in Tennessee will settle nothing posi tively as to the divinity of the P.ible or the origin of nwi.i. ;As far as the defendant himself is concerned the trial will 'disclose nothing more than what he taught in his Dayton classroom and how he taught it. And as for the Tennessee anti-evolution law, the trial will interpret it and pave the way for the determination of its constitutionality. None of these effects of the coming trial are very revo lutionary or sensational. In fact they warrant only mod erate interest in them by the public- Hut the Scopes caso is accomplishing something now, before the trial, which is 'of vital interest to the public and which gets at the real issue in the inodeinist-l'iuidanientali.st controversy. , This public service lies in the development by the ' lnou l;ey law" case of two groups of bigots and fanatics. 'On is as bigoted mid "intolerant as the other and each is equally reprehensible. The one group, which has been brought t- light, insists that evolution shall not ho.. explained even ;-: a theory in the schools, The other group consists of thos? who demand that school teachers . be . permitted to teac h ihe theory as a proven fact that must be accepted as truth. It is believed neither '.group represents a majority opinion. Even now bcfoi-o the case has gone to trial the Tennes .'ee statute has convinced many that it. is silly and futile to prohibit the explanation of the theory of evolution in state-maintained schools, but that, it would be equally in tolerant and despotic to force the theory upon the pupil aV an indisputable truth. And that is just where the proposi tion stood before the Tennessee anti-evolution law v:.: passed. 'IJ PUT Oi l A DREb AM' ; vol GOTTA V vJMA-n, TH' , n!', JT '- ' BE Th' fat womam. Good H do sumPn'.
