The old battleship Oregon, famed for the victory she helped win more than a quarter of a century ago, has now come to rest near the Rroadway bridge in the Portland harbor, there to remain a refuge of memories, an inspira tion of youth. Although now useless and discarded by a nation that must keep pace with naval development, the glory that is a proud possession of the old Oregon is none the less bright for that fact. Like the deeds of our ageing veterans, her fame will live long after the material remains have vanished, constantly giving new momentum to our efforts toward permanent peace, a better nation, and truer domocracy. . - J A POOR AL1IU. Receivers for the Milwaukee railroad have listed trur.k-iiijfl-bus competition as one of the reasons for the failure of the company to meet its obligations. There may be i.onio truth to the statement that the company has lost revenue from this competition, but it is hardly responsible for tho failure, l'.us and truck operation has come lo at;iy nnBTrttl gl'iUlumiy'lvBTirttiasirHitd ail iiilegrarpart oroiVr transportation facilities, yet it cannot possibly supplant railroads, and blaming this agency for lost earnings is utterly foolish. If the Milwaukee hud been efficiently operated, as other large systems serving similar territory under similar conditions, the amount of business handled vould have returned a small profit and made a deficit impossible. Over-organization, unnecessary promotion, in efficient management, poor personnel morale, and financial manipulation will ruin any railroad or any business. Com petition plays a small part when such conditions exist. A FOOLISH ciiakci;. The editorial in the Pocatello Idaho Stale; Journal enter ing a complaint against "bailed" traffic arrests in I'niou county is utterly foolish and probably resulted from co:i veisation with some disgiunllcd traveler who is insulted be cause he isn't allowed to tiavel ,ri0 miles an hour over Ore gon highways. Kvery community and every highway has that type of nioloi ist who knows the law, who breaks it knowingly, and who holds a grudge forevermore because lie happened to gel caught. Wo are glad when that variety is gathered in. ' The Pocatello editor, if he knows anything about niotoi ists, their speed habits, etc., knows that about 75 per cent of them break the speed laws and only about one per cer.t mo arrested and fined. To the average ear owner who drives a great deal the Oregon law of !', miles an hour js too slow. They believe, and are sincere in it, that they iv n drive at :ri and 10 frequently with perfect safety to themselves and others on the highway. We believe they fill and we are of tho opinion thai state traffic officers think likewise. The dangerous violator is the one who thinks he can drive beyond the limit on all occasions au.l under any traffic conditions and he is the man that is r.iually caught and should be caught. As far as "bailing" speeders is concerned, any drivr knows that il isn't nccessaiy to hail motorists to get then: beyond the ;!0-mile limit. And that's as (rue in Idaho as il is in Oregon. Anil if all the drivers who exceeded the limit set by law were arrested, the justices would he abV lo; do nothing else but hear their cases. The authorities should not and probably do not want such a fine line drawn bill they do want to slow up the careless and ineonsiderat'' Oliver wlui makes himself a menace on tin- highway. And il , is that brand that probably has found an audience for hi.i "crabbing" in Pocatello.
