Opinions have been expressed during the past few months In local circles t lint fanners who are directly affected might, if they chose to do .so, briny; suit against 1 he city that would result disas trously for I-a Grande citizens. .Such action would be based on the unsanitary and Inadequate con dition of the present system which, because of flow of- sewage, not properly sterilized und odors re sulting therefrom, causes a great nuisance, according to farmers who have to contend with this condi tion. Awaiting Election KfMiltM It Is understood that such ac tion is being postponed until fur ther evidence that nothing will be .done to correct the evil appears. V The city commissioners are do ing everything possible to attend to the matter they declare, and for this reason, inserted on the bal lot for the June 3rd special munic ipal election the $105.0011 bond is sue for the building of a new sew age disposal plant. The. following report on the con dition of the present sewage dis posal plant has been presented to the city commission and bus been determined to be corrected in ev ery detail: "The sewage disposal plant con sists of a single story septic tank and a chlorinating basin. The sep tic tank. 7(1 by 80 feet In super ficial dimensions has an effective depth varying between 4 and 7 feet below the lip of the outlet whr and a storage capacity approximat ing 21.000 gallons. Peare and Arthur Covelle Pay Extreme Penalty for Crimes EXECUTION SAID MOST GREWSOME Pierce, After Listening to Pleas of Portland Dele gation, Refused to Ex tend Clemency, SALEM. Ore. (By the Associated Press) L. W. peare and Arthur Covell, Coos county slayers, wero hanged at tho penitentiary this morning. Peare dropped through tho trap at 7:53 and was pronounced dead 1 1 minutes later. Covell dropped through at 8:34 but the fall failed to break his neck and ho -was strangled to death. He was pro nounced dead 0 minutes after wards. Officials said the hangings wero the most grewsome soon here In years. Pierce Maintain Htaud Governor Pierce, after listening1 to a Portland delegation that naked commutation of the death sentence to life imprisonment late yester day, refused to extend executive clemency to Covell and Peure. The governor said ho hud studied tho case from every angle and could find nothing to juatiry clem ency. ' The two condemned men accent ed the governor's decision philo sophically.
