THE REAL COMMENCEMENT.
I The seniors are graduating. From the elementary
schools, from the high schools, from the colleges and uni
versities they are being ushered forth to new fields of
activity, new experiences, new problems.
1 Some of them are through with school, though we hos
tile numlxT is rapidly decreasing. For them this is a red
commencement of the battles of life. Hut though some
are through with school, no one is through with study.
Though some are through with scholastic preparation, none
is through with that continual, sustained application which
is the accumulative preparation of all who are fired wi'.h
the ambition and zeal of which success is born.
Whatever the field of action to which the graduates
now seek entrance, they will find that the price of advance
ment, of service and reward, is indeed tliHuiciK'umiiJ
of study and preparation upon an ever-increasing scale.
Some there are, no doubt, who like to think that they now
are "through." Indeed they are through through with
hopo and through with ambition and through with advance
meat unless they now commence.
TRANSITION.
The Itt. Rev. W. II. Inge, "gloomy dean" or St. raid'!;
cathedral, London, has vei bally joined I'oiees with that
wing of the world churchmen who believe that religion
and the church are now undergoing another of those periods
of transition of which several arc recorded in history.
1 Speaking before the Church Club of New Yolk, Dean
Inge said: "The world is passing through a transition in
religion from authority to experience. The change is un
doubtedly a serious one. While it is still going on, we
must expect to find that the church is not speaking with
any very certain voice, and it is not exercising all the in
fluence which one might hope to see."
Dean Inge has lepealrdly, from his desk and the Eng
lish platform and pulpil, called upon the church to con
form to model u conditions lest it. lose that world influence
it has aciHliivd through st uggling centuries, lie is not
dismayed by the present situation because as an authority
'on church history he is not blind to the inevitability el'
chauge in all things. What he asks of the church is that
it take the lead and not lag behind to be reluctantly led.
