An eastern college professor has discovered in some research work on New Kngland history that Ctitton Mather was in danger of a breach of 'promise suit while courting his second wife, that more drunkenness was to bo seen in New Kiighmd in those early Puribiii days than any place in the wrld. Those who believe that enjoyment of life is the shortest, .mad to evei lasting torment should find little hope for tho -salvation of the American people of this generation, la Jact it is not inf letpiently rumored about by those who look Askance upon a smiling countenance that the United Slates is even now passing through the several stages of the de cline and fall. ' Surely no country, not even ancient Creece and tho Komans, was ever more abundantly provided with the pleas ures of life and relieved of more of life's miseries and dis comforts than America. Like the "woman upon the white horse" of the nursery rhyme, the people of the United Stales with their phono graphs, pianos and piano-players, radio, orchestras and ether music makers have music wherever they go. Theie nre more pastimes to attract people and more leisure t give to those pastimes. During the coming summer mil lions of men ami women in the United Slates will partici pate in numerous sports and recreations, the highways will be constantly congested with motorists pleasure bent, tho vacation resorts will be heavily patronized and the baseball parks and race tracks and pleasure parks will draw their usual crowds. Put why should this love of pleasure be cause for any thing but satisfaction? To avail himself of all this play the individual must woik the harder and faster, for it costs teal dollars and many of them to play in this big playground.
