Place on top of this a layer of half the sliced apples and sprinkle with one-half of the sugar, to which has been added the nutmeg and cinnamon. Dot with butter, sprinkle with another layer of crumbs, add the remain ing apples, sugar and spices and dot again with butter. Cover with remaining crumbs and dote with the remaining butter. Pour over this the wuter, lemon juice, and the grated lemon rind. Hake in a! moderate oven about 45 minutes, covering dish for the first half of the time and removing covi-r for the latter part of the buklng. Herve with cream, lemon juice or hard sauce.
